The scourge of prepper mentality....how to cure pack over-redundancy?

I can't participate in this thread.
I had two flashlights in my murse kit alone (Maratac AAA and Princeton Tec Scout headlamp).
I just added a third (Photon II).

Therefore, my advice is to develop stronger back and leg muscles and buy a bigger pack. :D

Haha, sounds like me. My large ALICE already weighs 1,000 lbs, and that's without the murder harness. :D

Yeah, some days I think I EDC way too much...

If I'm going on a multiple day trip I start out by making sure I have my five C's -cutting tool, combustion device, cordage, cover of some kind and container for water. After the mandatory items are accounted for I then try to fit in the luxury items while staying within my goal weight. If I'm alone I sleep in a hammock with a custom lightweight 5x7 tarp a friend made me. As far as cloths go I always bring flease long johns an extra pair of socks and of corse my Columbia Jacket. My food is usually a custom mixed oatmeal that contains all the daily goodness. Sounds like a lot of stuff but it's not bad at all!

Yeah, that's what I looked like at first, and this after carrying all that around over the years. :D

Oi, that the dreaded murder harness mentioned in Snarkland?

And yeah, muling around heavy gear tends to put some meat on one's bones...

If my BOB was limited to just me, then 10lbs of gear and I am living large. The family changes everything. I now carry 2lbs of diapers in my truck for all kinds of emergencies.

If I could only find the footie PJ's with bunnies on the feet she wears in my size I wouldn't need a blanket in my BOB. I can pull off pink.............. Problem is on of you guys would see the rabbit's ears and shoot me in the foot thinking you are getting your dinner.

Very nice thread, I truly envy you guys who actually have your shit together. I am so unprepared its not even funny...........someday ill shape up. Hopefully sooner than later. Perhaps this summer when time and money are more abundant for me. Some great ideas though. C_Tanner I really like the idea of having enough redundancy to split the pack. That makes alot of sense to me and is honestly something that probably would have never crossed my mind. Very good idea indeed!

I always carry wayyy too much. Recently I've been thinking about going on an extended trip with nothing but a knife and fire starter so I can see what else I actually "need."

My problem is, I'm not the best organizer. I can read different lists of what people carry all day long, and still couldn't come up with anything good. Plus, I have 2 BOB's. My Falcon II, that goes with me everywhere, and my large ALICE that sits here in the man cave. I have stuff in my ALICE that I don't have in my Falcon II. Larger hatchet, tarp, etc. Hopefully, if the shtf, I'll be able to grab both, and dump my Falcon II contents into my ALICE, lol.

My BOB changes with the weather and my skills. I say if you can't carry it while doing normal errands and shopping on the weekends without bringing attention to yourself, its too big or too "tactical" looking. Bugging out also needs to include blending in. If I don't look prepared or useful, then that is one more advantage. I can move about without being hassled for my gear or tons of people attaching themselves to me thinking my job is to save the world. This is why I use standard looking book bags or messenger bags. I look just like some other chump wandering around.

The Falcon II is what I run also, that thing has alot of bang for the buck with the Proteus strapped on bottom.
Fire, first aid, water/purifier, food, clothes, laplander, hammock/tarp, cordage, gps, solar crank charger. Machax. I already carry a multitool, folder, short knife and pistol so the only thing I would have to grab from the house is a rifle.

I found it easier to break it down by categories and work on them one at a time rather than building a kit all at once.

25 pounds is the limit for me. Also, a good point to keep in mind is to prep for a minor disaster (power outage, civil unrest, etc.). Do not prep for "end of the world, World Government troops in black suits marching into town" scenarios. You won't survive that, anyway, so no need to prep for it. When a gas mask finds its way into your BOB, you know you've gone too far... or if it's over 25 pounds. :)

This is very TRUE information. I went to Disney World 2 years ago with a small Maxpedition fanny/shoulder bag. Every nook and cranny of that thing was searched every time I went into a new park. (There are no metal detectors either) Foreign male exchange students looking types with big duffle bags got a cursory glance. I saw it every day I was there. I never saw a single other maxpedition type pack or bag the single week either. As a matter of fact I live in a small city and never see any of those or murses here. I have to go to a gun show to see someoene carrying it. That type gear is very likely to single you out IMO. Another reason why all my BOB type long guns will either fold or take down into a duffle bag (sorry M1A).

Just out of curiosity, is your bag black or some kind of "tactical" color/camo?
