The scourge of prepper mentality....how to cure pack over-redundancy?

Yeah, that's what I looked like at first, and this after carrying all that around over the years. :D

That's what goes into Dubz' left strap of the murder harness (including the dude).

I used to carry far too much. Still probably carry more than I need, but I have definitely whittled it down from what it was. The biggest part of that was the August challenge last year. Being able to get by on so little really made me understand just what I needed to have, and what was luxury or comfort items.

I think Moose nailed it for a bare bones loadout, or a pretty light one anyways.

I think it's important to differentiate the purpose of said pack though, is this a BOB/GOOD/GO pack? Or an EDC? or a Weekender? My BOB is heavy and contains numerous redundancies because it is a BOB, no idea how long or what the reason for bugging out would be, but if I'm forced to evacuate Manhattan then it has to be pretty bad and I want to know the pack is prepared for both Urban and Natural environments. I also know I can chuck stuff as needed, but I'd rather have it to begin with then having to search/scavange/beg/kill for it.

well, there's the other way to go.

bring everything in your car. go camping. only walk in with what you need right then.

walk out and get more stuff if you need it. make a list as you do this.

whatever you end up with is a good base list. what you didn't bring? keep an eye on it.

next time, bring your base list supplies. see what you walk out for.

split between base list supplies "must haves", and "like to haves" (chairs, etc); eventually you get a "would use if needed but..." and "never"

course, that might take a lot of trips. which may vary as well.

i guess there's no such thing as "one kit to fit them all"

Bladite has a good idea. Take what is needed, leave what is not. Simple. Effective. Like him.

i certainly don't follow my own advice much.

most of my camping involves having a car not more than mile away. plus i have a cart. we're into making theme camps. some of them require trucks to haul stuff.

i'm lucky if mine requires one oversized wheel barrow load :)

i WANT to try going lighter, but eh, why? :)

well, the lightest i went, esp at a folk fest was to setup a tent or a hammock, to claim space, left everything else in the car. anti-theft. even then, i had to chase some stoned hippy down to get a chair back. i guess it spoke to him. so he took it.
