Ok , so i have come to the forum for a little venting. I was too proud to tell this story originally but now i think it could be a good learning tool. Heres the background to my story:
I have been buying and selling knives like its my job until one fateful day, when i was using a small sebenza to cut the zip tie off a stroller. I slipped stabbing myself in the lower calf. Twenty something stitches and a regretful auction listing later my sebenza was gone. For some reason i felt like that knife was at fault.
Now i know selling the knife was my own doing, but now the scar is barely noticeable and the wife still wont ok the 300 plus to get another one. I tried explaining that owning a sebenza doesn't really cost that much.....yes i paid 350 new but as soon as anger took over a 290 quick sale was in around 3 minutes of listing even after it had been used .....on me! So it cost 60 bucks give or take to own one of the more expensive knives. My wife will argue that the medical bill far exceeds that, but if you are a little more careful you could get off cheap.
So....if i can get my point across, any of you who want that sebenza and are reluctant to shell out the cash, dont worry.....you will get most of your money back if things dont work out...just be careful !

the wife still wont ok the 300 plus to get another one.
Do you have a private bank account? Or just a single shared account with your wife? Unless she's the sole breadwinner, and unless you're in dire straits, your discretionary income is none of her business.

I definitely got the point of your story. Don't marry someone who is controlling.

Good summary. ;)

I buy whatever i want but i guess its more of a principle thing, and like many hobbies...hunting , fishing, knife collecting, and so on, theres always better use of that money. To most "normal" people 300 plus for a knife is outragious, but we all know those numbers can get up there and we can always justify the cost. To her a 5 dollar knife is just as good, so why do i need to waste the money is her argument. Even being able to afford it still doesnt justify spending as much as a gas and electric bill or cartfull of groceries i guess.

Knife as a hobby is something that requires use and time to appreciate. Give your wife some better cutlery than the $5 junk. Once she feels the usage difference, she should change her mind... somewhat at least. I have changed the minds of everyone one my family about all knives being equal.

Im not getting into the whole husband/wife/knife dilemma.
But, I would not sell my one and only 21 if I cut myself. I love it too much. I own a knife, she owns a quality knife.
She now knows and respects the hobby very much.
We own both of our vehicles and are on top of life for the most part. She is $mart. I am not $o. ;). Plus I get to handle so many knives customizing them. I get worn out any way.
Good luck with your situation.
Zip ties are always a PIA to cut.

I totally understand you lou. I just buy what I want and it's not even an issue, it never was really. If your wife has more than one purse or pair of shoes from a department store, then it can be the same sort of thing. The golden rule in our house is that as long as all of the bills are paid on time, we can do whatever we like with our respective cash. My wife doesn't mind and as long as i'm not buying a $1,000 knife every payday things are cool.

It's all about 3 things really. Respect, responsibility, and priority.buy yourself a new Sebenza, save up a bit at a time as you go. Remember, bills will always come your way, and in the end you can't take it with you.

My wife and I have separate accounts, we pay our bills and we do whatever we want with the rest of our money. Neither one of us ask each other's authorization for anything. Pretty cool I think, what are we talking about.

Oh yeh crk do hold there value pretty good, excellent customer service. I must say, so far crk is the best knife I have ever owned, it's worth the money.

My favorite comparison was to a friend who couldn't believe anyone would spend that kind of money.

I asked him if he drank bottled water and he replied that that was all he drank, so I said let's do the math. He said he drank at least 4 bottles a day at an average of $1 a bottle that's nearly $1500 a year (and that's just water), I said that's 3 nice Sebenzas, he hasn't said anything since.

I still can't get over the thought of you blaming the knife for your injury. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "Always cut AWAY from your body". Or if not, you'd figure it's common sense. Don't take this the wrong way, but sit here and think about it for a second....

Both incidents were caused by YOUR own actions/bad decision.

Incident #1 - You injured YOURSELF by not using proper cutting technique. Instead of holding yourself accountable, you blamed the knife.

Incident #2 - Because you thought it was the knife's fault.... YOU sold it. Instead of holding yourself accountable, you blamed your wife.

I don't feel the least bit sorry for you.

The only rule that matters when it comes to selling a product: It is worth precisely what someone is willing to pay for it.

If you're like me and wear the handles off every knife he buys it can get expensive... When I'm done with them they aren't worth much to anyone. I keep and use my knives.

I'm a stay at home dad and due to some recent financial changes we no longer have any significant free spending money. However when we did, I spent it all on knives. Occasionally I would sell one or two and use the funds to buy something for the wife or take her somewhere. (I recently sold my one and only Sebenza 21 and got her a new recliner for Valentines Day...did I mention she's also 8mo pregnant? :) wonderful woman)

No, I think the point is don't get married.
Or marry the right girl. My wife doesn't care what I spend money on as long as the bills get paid. I'm the same way with her purchases. She wants me to be happy in life and I want the same for her.

This! My situation exactly and if a marriage isn't this way, it probably won't last. Also in my 51 years, I have never done much more than a paper cut with any of my knives. If you injure yourself to the level of a hospital visit, maybe knife ownership isn't for you.

Start stashing some money away, here and there, until you have enough to get another one.

Have it shipped to work, not the house.

Then tell her I gave it to you because I have several of them. I'll cover your story.

And learn from your lesson. You cut you, not the knife. It was just doing its job.

And with tight zip ties, insert and twist the blade against them, when you try to slice them it creates a dangerous situation because they are so slippery, the blade can fly off unexpectedly.

Which is what happened in your case, correct?

And BTW, that's why I never got married. Been with this one 9 years now but I do what I want. She ever started that crap I'm outta here, clean, no divorce and losing half my stuff worries.

And I'll continue to get whatever I can afford after paying the bills first. Like normal.

You might want to check the common law marriage changes a few years ago in Ohio. If you and "this one" share the same physical address she can already take half of what you own.

To the OP, my wife thinks much like yours. It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
