The sebenza isnt that expensive......rant

Sounds like you need some side work that pays cash only :) Now go get another sebenza!!! Tell her you need a matching scar on the other calf ;)

Well now i have a new problem, i should i get the sebenza or an xm 18 .....i can direct order up a 3 inch in april . Never held a hinderer or actually seen one in person.....they are a little more moola but i can get it for dealer cost....any thoughts ?

Very interesting responses here. Really shows where some people's heads are. Here's my little secret to happiness: Get her involved with you! I have exposed Mrs. VegasBlade to my hobbies by buying her smaller versions of my collectables. :) She has a few nice, albeit not super expensive knives. She carries a small Spydie, a Kershaw Leek, or a SOG Twich. She picks what fits her, and more importantly, what SHE likes. I got a new Shotgun, Mrs. VegasBlade saw how much I loved it, she showed enough interest, bam, I bought her a Remington 870 youth Jr. 20g. Fits her perfect. Now she loves it so much, she wants to send it to Vang Comp!!! I got into Archery, she has a new Hoyt compound bow.

I'm just saying: get them involved with you. Show them why you do it, where the addiction comes from. I guess I'm incredibly lucky, but my wife and I are BEST friends, and share our hobbies together. Might try it.

Great advice, i agree with that......a pink grip it is!

Sebenzas are great! But I love my XM's more. But to each there own! You will find which fits you better.

I agree Vegas. My wife and I are best friends, but she doesn't like to do everything that I do and vise versa. She lets me do my knife thing, cause she knows it makes me happy, and that makes here happy. My wife talks on about stuff I don't really care about, but I listen. If I talked about knife stuff to her, she doesn't care either, but she'll pretend to listen, lol! I mean come on, we are sick in the head about knives!! Look at us :D

I never held a hinderer, ive looked at countless pictures bet never actually seen one in person. I can get flipper or non, spanto or slicer and my choice of color. Just having trouble picking . The sebenza has almost lost its luster in a way, and im more of a prybar or use you knife for whatever type anyway and i always felt like i was doing something wrong using the crk for that stuff. I will however miss the titanium on both scales look.....i love the way the sebbies look all worn out

Is it really all that much?
A single night out, with a proper meal, some wine and a couple Cognac's will set you back at least as much.
The Sebenza will at least last much longer;)

A single night out where?

And yes, it is a lot of money considering the vast majority of people either don't carry a knife or won't spend more than $15 on one. A $450 knife that doesn't cut any better than an $8 Opinel is curious isn't it.

I was planning to post something very similar. Well said.

Wife has her own (smaller) knife collection. She enjoys sharing the excitement of a new knife with me. Of course, sometimes that can backfire as she "confiscated" my first CRK as it had a sapphire (her birthstone) cabochon along with a cool UG pattern. But she didn't complain when I bought myself another. :)

I totally understand you lou. I just buy what I want and it's not even an issue, it never was really. If your wife has more than one purse or pair of shoes from a department store, then it can be the same sort of thing. The golden rule in our house is that as long as all of the bills are paid on time, we can do whatever we like with our respective cash. My wife doesn't mind and as long as i'm not buying a $1,000 knife every payday things are cool.

It's all about 3 things really. Respect, responsibility, and priority.buy yourself a new Sebenza, save up a bit at a time as you go. Remember, bills will always come your way, and in the end you can't take it with you.

Couldn't have said it better, Rev.

My g/f is a Filipina immigrant, and so very generous w/her money...it's like I have top pinch myself.

I've gone through MANY different makers and many 1K+ knives, and i always circle back to a Sebenza. Right now on a newly aquired Insigno small with Micarta, and love it. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of the stubby pry bars that don't slice or flip ...known as Hinderers.

Well, not counting Micky D, most any restaurant in my hometown will do that to your wallet.
And that doesn't mean you need to buy a bottle of Petrus or finish of with a Louis XIII.

Opinels are great bargains, I won't argue with you there.
However, it is all about perspective.
If a knife performs well on a daily basis year after year, then $450 isn't all that much in my book.
Nor is a grand or two for that matter.

I don't wanna sound like an elitist here, I'm not, seriously.

At work, my colleagues are all asking me to sharpen their crappy knives all the time, and the oohs and aaahs are numerous when I let them play with my Sebenza's.
To have a quality piece of equipment on me that I can rely on at all times to do the task at hand is worth a pretty penny, that is all.

As to the discussion above on XM's or Sebenza, that is an easy choice to me.
The Spanto XM that I have is basically collecting dust now, after the initial novelty has worn off.
It won't cut anything good, simply opening a thick cardboard box or cutting a hole in a Rockwool acoustic sealing plate leaves me less than impressed with that pry bar of a "knife"
Sturdy is all fine and dandy, but the main object of a knife is to cut darn it!
The plastic washer compared to the bronze washer in a Sebenza really speaks volumes about the two knives in my book.
A good quality cutting tool versus a hyped weekend warrior prop seems to sum it up nicely. To me.

I've never played around with a slicer ground one though, I guess I should get me one of them instead:)

I had the opportunity to try out an xm-18 during a pass-around. I was very excited to see how it compared to my Sebbies. I was very upset that I did not like it. Obviously everyone is different, so you may love it. It just was not for me.

I was married once....now I own a great knife collection.

Just buy your other half some nice shoes and then tell her you bought a new knife at the same time....to save on delivery costs!

Wow. A lot of people in here REALLY enjoy adversarial relationships. I agree with powernoodle(except the religious comment) that I'll choose happiness with my wife over a silly knife any day. I find it sad that there's boys out there that still feel the need to subjugate women. A real man doesn't need to do that kind of thing.

My favorite comparison was to a friend who couldn't believe anyone would spend that kind of money.

I asked him if he drank bottled water and he replied that that was all he drank, so I said let's do the math. He said he drank at least 4 bottles a day at an average of $1 a bottle that's nearly $1500 a year (and that's just water), I said that's 3 nice Sebenzas, he hasn't said anything since.

You bring up an excellent point. While everyone's finances are different, it isn't hard for most people to save up for something they are passionate about. I have had the same conversation with people close to me. They are amazed when they ad up what that daily cup of Starbucks, bottled water, or fast food lunch costs. Save a little everyday and it is not painful, plus most of us here on the forum could sell any of our knives if we had to for close to what we paid.
