The sharpest factory knife out of the box?

Don't you mean what is it!

Mark, I think he means the Name of the company that has the sharpest factory edges, not necessarily the particular knife...

Darrel, funny you should mention that as I was pondering it myself today.
Listed in order of purchase history, and have shown to be consistent!

I've not gotten a Cold Steel that didn't arrive with a razor edge right out of the box.

Chris Reeve knives never fail to pop the hair right off!

MicroTech seems to have gotten the sharpening process down as well.

Now I've seen custom knives arrive, most of them, that are not up to what I call Sharp, point in fact I recently picked up a very well made fixed blade by a M. Takahashi and it was sharp but not SHARP, after I bought it from him I took it up to my hotel room and put an EDGE on it, THEN....I took it back to his table and picked up one of his other knives, handed it to him and with hand motions I indicated I sharpened it and he checked it out and when he ran his thumb across it his eyes got wide and he started laughing and nodding his head going OH, that is sharp!! So he knows what sharp is but why knives from makers don't arrive sharp is beyond me! Some say they don't know how to hand sharpen a knife and rely on belts to do the job?

Good question Darrel!

I have two Cold Steel fixed blades, the Trailmaster and Black Bear Classic, both with stag handles and a wicked edge.

Okay, two come to mind from all the knives I have experienced:

MicroTech SOCOM M/A
Spyderco Military CPM-440V

These two came out of their boxes razor shaving sharp, sharper than I have had the experience with!

Definately the tiny little SAK I got from my pops when I was about 8yrs old. You know, the cute little one with a 1/16" blade. That thing was sharp. After all, the spine on that thing is only about half as thick as the edge on my Busse SHII (which, by the way, was also extremely sharp out of the box).

My MT mini-SOCOM auto, by the way, was not that sharp when I got it. Great knife, but it needed a good stroppin' out of the box...

Second Runners Up:
Spyderco
Cold Steel (especially noteworthy considering how thick the grinds are)

First Runner Up:
Chris Reeve

Champion:
Microtech (incredible consistency)

Sebenza. Blackjacks and Marbles are also very, very good. Funny thing is that the ones that come the sharpest are the easiest ones to keep that way. All three of these have very thin edges that will slice and cut like crazy. Downside is that I have also chipped the edges cutting things that I should not have necessarily been cutting (CAT #5 cable and frozen wood

).

Sharpest out of the box? I'd have to go with anything Marbles first, the Sebenza second, then Cold Steel.

All three I've found to be extremely sharp.

My runners up for 1st place are CS and Spyderco. They both ALWAYS come "scary sharp."
Almost, but not quite as sharp was my Emerson Commander,
about three notches down from the Commander were a couple Benchmades I bought for friends this year, and LEAST sharp of the bunch were the two Microtech HALO IIIs I bought.
I've seen other people praise the MT edges, does this mean I'm so unlucky that I get TWO stinkers???
(wouldn't surprise me much!)

I have no experience with Chris Reeves knives so that's why no comment there.

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

Ken,
Actually my CTII is the least sharp MT I own. I think it may be a little tougher for MT to achieve their scary sharpness with the OTFs (especially the "user" OTFs, like the CTII and Halo III) because the blades are so thick and narrow. I'm just kind of speculating here, but I think if you try a UDT, LCC or a SOCOM you'll see what the rest of us have been experiencing.

Microtech and Cold Steel. In fact, I personally have yet to see even a custom maker get knives as sharp. Sorry, Darrel.

Spyderco is close, but I haven't seen the same consistency.

Of the top production knives, Benchmade is at the bottom. Absolutely no consistency.

Overall, it's my Microtechs. However, I had a Kershaw Whirlwind that was sharpened at 14.8 degrees. It is the sharpest factory knife I have ever seen.--OKG

I rarely get "NIB" knives, as I am usually too cheap to pay anything close to retail, but the sharpest knife I have ever received was an A.G. Russell Walker lock with the wood handles, and Ti bolsters. That was so scary sharp, that I just had to look at the edge on a microscope to see what it looked like. Very well ground and sharpened, and with the ATS-34 steel, it has been that way for quite some time. Next would be a BM Sentinel that I got "used", with the factory edge still on it. It was very finely ground, with tiny, tiny "teeth" from the course finishing grind. It was a mean slicer. Puma makes some fine edges too.
