The sharpest factory knife out of the box?

Darrel,

I have to say that the knife that really impressed me first was a Kershaw\Onion Black out. Then I got a Sebenza.

As for testing, The best way to find out if it is sharp is to cut a free standing "SLI". If it's legs are left standing, you have a sharp knife.

Forgot about the Moki knives I've had, they came with an EXTREME edge on them, VG-10 steel on the one and it had a great edge...

I think Fällkniven deserves mentioning another time (kitchen knives and other). Marttiini deserves mention too.

My Chris Reeve Mountaineer II came so sharp that it scares me.
I have a Heimo Roselli puukko that is also what my friend Yvsa calls "full body shiver"
sharp.

Cold Steel is the only one I've seen consistently hit it. My Sebenza wasn't real sharp out of the box (it is now). Also had a not-so-sharp Spyderco Endura, and a Kershaw minitask that wasn't hair popping sharp right out of the box. Of course, these knives were sharp enough to cut, just not as sharp as I like 'em

But I've got a half dozen CS knives and they've all been shaving sharp out of the box.

1. Microtech Leads the way
2. Cold steel close second along with
spyderco military and civilian

Microtech is the sharpest (I may be biased). I can duplicate their sharpness using ceramic crock sticks on the steepest angle (thin blade = razor sharpness). To answer your second question, it is a matter of sensitivity on the pad of my index finger. When I place my index finger lightly on the blade and put slight tension perpendicular to the edge, I can feel how sharp it is by how it bites into my skin. Wicked sharp won't let my index finger slide at all, knife wants to bite into my skin. Its just in the feel...having soft skin on your fingertips helps. When I get them like that the hair jumps off clean and some of the skin too if you aren't careful.

Reeve is the sharpest easily. Next from my experience is J.Marttiini (specially the carbon steel models). Spyderco comes next with some very sharp on others not that sharp at all. (Er... I do have to admit that I only have one CRK, but that was in the leaque of it's own...)

Hugo.
