The shield

Family friendly language, please, gents.

I find shields are more interesting when they go beyond a simple outlined shape. Here are some nice and not-so-nice examples:

Unmistakable corporate logo shield:

Very inexpensive import with a suitably unskilled shield:

This bright red shield is stunning against stag:

A higher grade shield is found on many different special Old Timer series:

Yep...that Case shield is class all the way, in fact that shield would look good on just about anything.

My apologies guys for using curse slangs when I see some great knives. I agree totally with out Traditional ways here...and I wouldn't have it any other way.
That aside, I see those great Old Timers have the same serial number... I have wondered just how you get this?...is this done by pre ordering that number when you here of another model knife coming up for release?

I personally always referred to the sowbelly shield as the "bodice" shield, and I'm assuming you can see why. Didn't even know it was called a sowbelly shield until today.

This has been an interesting thread so far. It's great to see some of the less common shield styles out there. I prefer shields on most knives, but it doesn't bother me if there isn't one. There are certain exceptions where they just don't look right to me though, like on a Barlow.

Don't forget the BSA shield.

There are also Cub Scout and Girl Scout shields.

Nice looking knives and shields.

I've heard it referred to as the "bodice" and sometimes also the "Barbie" shield. The shield was used on patterns other than sowbellies.

I think these are both "sowbelly" shields but only one is on a sowbelly pattern.

Dag nab it, those are beautiful John! I have that same picture saved from some time back - I hope you don't mind!?

I love being able to learn about the diversity of shields in this thread as my collection is based on diversity. I have to say that this Northfield shield (well the whole knife really) works for me for some reason. I wish I could have bought this one (the photo is from collectorknives). I'm not sure how I feel about shields in general, sometimes I feel they work and other times not. For example I wish the cloud shield was not on my Palm handled Courthouse whittler as I find it doesn't match the grain of the wood, nor the bolster treatment, but wouldn't like the knife in the picture as much without the shield it has.

It was a set of three sold with matching numbers. Semi-rare, only a couple guys in the Schrade Collectors forum have posted matching sets; they are most often found as single knives. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-Bone-Collectors-Series?highlight=anniversary

That was interesting reading, especially where they found there was a problem with the Red Bone and traced it back to being there even before Bokers had recieved it!, both Hal, and Michael are outstanding in their knowledge, and its always a pleasure to view their knives, thank you for showing us your neat set Bob

Here's proof that a well-chosen and placed shield can really enhance the beauty of scales. It also depends on the inletting of the shield, obviously more tricky on stag or jigged bone, nothing more unpleasant than rough edges that can be felt. So it says a lot for the skill of the cutler. I don't care for shields on a Barlow though or any other large bolstered knife like certain Congress interpretations, too much metal then. Conversely, a Sodbuster should be left un adorned in my view.

What is that shield on the top row extreme right? Interesting, looks like a 'snowdrop' or bloom style, not seen this before.

Willgoy -

I'm not sure what to call that shield. It looks like a banner shield with part of one end cut off.

Here are better pics with a bigger variety. Most of the knives in the previous pictures are here, too.

Amazing selection of knives (and shields...)

I really liked what Charlie said about a knife with out a shield is like pants with out a belt. I only have one with out a shield, and yes it is a favorite. Here are my favorite production shields.

Great thread.
I have about 15 shields CAD/CAM'ed.
Been doing them for a couple makers who have had good feedback from customers.
Still have a few customs without only because the mammoth & stag are so nice.

I saw this vintage Valentine's day card and was reminded of this thread. Looks like the "Barbie shield". Happy Valentine's day! :)

Buck Shields (300 series) 101.

In this photo you see a history of the Buck shields you will encounter from standard production knives. Starting left to right: the old knife, bolt and hammer; beginning in late 85 the 'BUCK' shield; the ink easily wore off, so back to knife, bolt and hammer in 1990
but with new rounded end shape; then see below to second photo for pillar shield that came in with change to stainless liner and three springs and finally the new 'Blue Buck' shield on new models. The traditional sawcut "plastic" scale knives continue to have the knife, bolt and hammer shield. You will see an occasional special shield added on the scale with the regular one or you will see a special order engraved shield in place of the regular one (rare). If I ever win the lottery, I am going to have a special order, clip and warcliff blade made and have 300BUCKS stamped on the shield. 300

Edit: Actually the current knife, bolt and hammer is shown on the second and third photo below, the current one has the hammer handle extended a little and the end closed off.
