The Smokies!!!

If you are going to be anywhere around Townsend you got to eat at The Timbers.

Don't forget to bring a 460 Smith and Wesson for the horses.

Sorry, meant the bears.

No.....I meant the horses :o

And you go to the mountains to taste wine? I thought the whole reason to go to the mountains was to score moonshine and to pee outside freely?

Don't miss the Smoky Mountain Brewery in Gatlinburg. They brew 10 or so Microbrews downstairs and the food is great. My favorite is the Tuckalechee Porter

If you want to go underground, Tuckalechee Caverns and the Lost Sea Adventure are both awesome. The caverns are more exciting, but a lot more steps. Its not bad though. The Lost Sea is an underground lake, really easy walk down to it, and a glass bottomed boat ride. its really cool.

My favorite places to swim are the Chimneys and a place locals call "the Y". The water is ice cold. I love it.

If you like bikes, you might enjoy Deal's Gap, "tail of the Dragon" something like 300 S-turns in 14 miles. It ends on the other side of the NC border. There is a tree decorated with broken bike parts like a Christmas tree. People come from all over the country to ride it.

Damn good pizza too, but I'll have to disagree on the booze. The black bear ale is, for lack of a more awesomer word, AWESOME!!!

yeah that's a tough call. That's why you have to start with the sampler, a champagne flute of each of them, with the optional seasonals

Drive up to Clingman's Dome and then walk up to the lookout tower for the great views. Visit the Cherokee reservation on the NC side. Smoky Mountain Knife Works is impressive for the wide selection.

I could take time from my busy schedule and come up there and help out with some ideas on what to do.
I have a few things in mind ;)

Have fun, be safe and send pictures...:)

Being a girl from the flat lands of Ohio, I am extremely excited to be traveling the Smoky Mountains. :D I have a super sweet cabin rented. I need to plan what I will be doing during my vacation, any suggestions? Horseback riding and white water rafting are already on the agenda, and I am researching wine tasting at the winery now.

I wonder if I will should take my MBC? Too bad I don't have a Busse folder yet, I could just keep it in the pocket of my daisy dukes when I go hiking. :grumpy:

Lexi, have fun!
Take it easy and relax, get some rest.
For hiking... you should get someone to make you a carbon fiber or wood sheath that would pair up as a walking stick with AK47/Waki/Rucki, for those times when MBC does not seem sufficient...:D

If You are going to the Gatlinburg area , try rafting the upper Pigeon with Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Me and the family went in early June and had the best 3 hours of our vacation. Hope You have a great time!

If you have the time, take a side trip to Franklin, N.C. and do some gem stone mining. I found a 252 carat sapphire and a ruby that's a little larger. I stay away from the mines that are "salted' because, even though you're guaranteed to find gem stones, they're usually trash. You never know. You might strike it rich. One guy found a sapphire, that he traded for a caribbean island.

Hiking?

Don't overdo it the first day. Water is more important than many other things people carry. If you are in a place where you can buy a bottle easily anytime you are thirsty, don't carry TOO much because money weighs less. :)

Eat right and eat well without drastic changes from normal in Ohio. The local food will be great, but don't overdo it at one sitting (unless it's the last day/night). Try grits if you never have.

Take good care of your feet - good socks, good shoes - keep them dry. When you feel a hot spot, take care of it before it becomes a serious blister.

HAVE FUN DOING ! ! ! Too many people worry more about gearing up than enjoying the activity. Gear is important for some things, but sometimes we overdo the gear and it becomes a major inconvenience to the fun.

Small bottles of bug spray and sunscreen depending on the activity. Sunglasses and a way to not lose them. Hat.

Snakes - watch your step and don't put your hands in a "blind spot" over logs, rocks, etc.

Have a Blast!
Oh, has Alex been stalking you? Just wondering, since Amy left.
:D

Lots of good advice already, so I'll just add: enjoy your time in some of the oldest mountains in the world.

It's all about fun! Do all the things you wouldn't or couldn't do back home.

Enjoy the Smokies! But next time, head west in those Daisy Dukes and see the Rockies!

Be safe.
