The Sprig

Haha, well, if it wasn't for good friends...and yes I had a feeling someone might make mention of the fact that I do leather work, but only for folders, so the leather on hand isn't thick enough for fixed blade use, that plus this one has a guard that isn't lower than the edge, which when I did do fixed blades I liked having the guard cam into a position I made inside the sheath for best retention.

Thanks Ken ;) glad I brought a smile to your face today!

I changed the angle of the clip so that I could wear it as a cross draw knife, works well in that position, can also easily cover it up with a shirt too if need be. The lanyard has a diamond knot near the end of the handle that also aids in removing the knife from the sheath. The sheath, I took a small blade and cut some of the overlip area to make it a bit easier to remove, it was sort of stuck, but now it will retain well and allow me to remove it with still a fairly strong pull, so it's still secure. The lanyard also had a Celtic bead that acts as a keeper, when you put the lanyard around your wrist, just slide the bead up to your wrist, now you have an even more secure lanyard hold, it's not going to slide off your wrist with that on there.

The knife is really neat in shape and use, Bird n trout knife can also be used for many other things as well, love how pointy it gets! While it arrived with a toothy edge, I did sharpen it up some, which took some time on my Shapton stones btw, tuff stuff that S90v ! but now she cuts like crazy, very nice :)

Nice job, sounds like you are getting it dialed in. I put mine on the sharpener as well, love how this knife cuts. The feel in the hand is a pleasure.

Man, you guys are really making it hard to wait to pick one of these up.

Thanks guys, it's a wicked cutter ! I have a friend that has the Southfork, I told him he should find a knife maker that would do a regrind on the blade, maybe not as much as the Sprig's blade but close to that, since the Southfork isn't a big chopper it could stand to lose some weight ;)

I had one of my Southfork's reground, IMO it does improve the knife. Phil designs and builds beautiful knives. Keep hoping Spyderco will do an 8" Phil Wilson Shelter Cove fillet knife. It would be a thing of beauty.

Nice, did you do the work yourself on the regrind?

My sprig has been on kitchen duty since I got it and is a champ. Fishing season got going and finally got her out for what she is intended.

That sharp point was great opening up the belly and helped in cleaning the blood line along the spine. Was harder to lop off the head and tail than I thought though. Was a fat 14"er, but thought it should have been easier. I did notice after the blade wasn't as sharp as it could have been. It sees a lot of use and I haven't touched it up in a bit. I look forward to more fish and more cleaning!

I don't remember you having the custom fillet knife!

So how did they do for you?

Man, his fillet knives are awesome! That's his Punta Chivato model. It gets the lion's share of the work at the cleaning table. The Sprig works well on the kayak for smaller fish and odd jobs. It sees a lot of kitchen use too.
