The Spyderco Drunken: Amazing knife, Ruined by its Pocket Clip Fixed with a pair of pliers

The Spyderco Drunken is not even made I Golden Co. as with many of their knives it’s made in Taiwan And still they are asking $400 for it.
With S90cv blade steel it should be priced at $150 IMHO.

Is blade steel the only indicator of what a knife should be priced at?

You must have not understood my post clearly, it's not just the cost of the blade steel is made of it's that this knife is being made Taiwan not in Golden Co. as many of Spyderco's lower cost knives are being made.
I am in no way implying that the quality of knives made in Taiwan are less or not are good, as the knives Spyderco makes in the USA at Golden Co. it's the cost of labor in Taiwan is much lower then in Golden Co.

So i don't understand why Spyderco on their web page have the Druken MSRP at $630 and many knife online sellers are asking around $400 for it.

Again IMHO the price should be around $150.

It is generally acknowledged, that Taichung knives are amongst the best made in the Spyderco line-up.

Which of their lower cost knives are made in Taiwan?

The pricing differential your seeing is called MAP. More details/discussion can be found in the Spyderco sub-forum.

Your opinion is all good my friend. To each their own.

So much heat in this discussion... Opinions aside, both knives (ZT and Spyderco) are very high quality products... IMO The Drunken is a higher quality knife overall... I own both, and I am very pleased with both purchases! Reviews are only well-written expressions of personal bias and opinion... "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "opinions are like assholes, everybody has one"

It's been around four years since i worked in a store where the Spyderco knives were good sellers, so i am not sure what knives are today priced lower then others, but that was not a problem i picked the Delica2vg10 blade steel one made in Japan as my first Spyderco knife then i picked up a sprint run PM2 with cpm s35vn blade steel it's my EDC today i also have their Manix2 with cpms110v blade steel and the Autonomy2 with Lc200n blade steel.
I have spoken with Sal many times while selling his knives also his son who Designed the PM2 so i respect their Company and their knives, just feel with the Durken they have missed it and i am betting it will be soon history or redesigned.

Collaboration knives like the Drunken, the Rock Lobster, The Slysz Bowie, the Leafstorm, etc. are always soon history.

Every once in a while something will re-appear in a sprint run like the PPT or the Shabaria. Those are exceptions though not rules.

Spyderco sell knives at MSRP on their website, so as not to compete with their dealer network.

OK, I'm kickstarting this old thread because...all you guys influenced (positively and negatively) my decision to eventually purchase a Drunken last week.

I don't know if it's twice as good as a 456, but its substantially better in every way...except the clip. Crap, what have I done?!? I paid all this money on a beautiful, smooth, light, sexy ass knife with a horrible pocket clip. Now I'm stuck with it, or I can unload it I guess. Life sucks. Oh wait, I just re-bent the clip, perfect.

Who can say if it is or isn't "twice as good"? As far as that goes why buy any knife that costs more than $20.
Sorry, not sorry to all the haters

Its not the pocket clip that kills this knife...its the price tag. I'll stick with the ZT 456 and an extra $200 in my pocket!

Not much of a point there slick. I’d easily take a $30 Ontario Rat and keep $200 in my pocket before buying a ZT 456. How does my opinion matter in that scenario? I see a lot if really sweet knives posted that cost $2000 or more, I think wow, nice blade but doesn’t fit my budget. Not “it’s not worth it”

Value is subjective... you don't value good construction, quality steel, or supporting the forum with a paid membership.

I value good steel, good fit and finish, and a lifetime warranty from an american company that pays sustainable wages to american workers using american materials...and I'm willing to pay a premium for it.

Enjoy your Rat & Drunken tho:)
