The spyderco native 5 is currently the best EDC knife change my mind!

I really like the Native 5. I also like Spydie back-locks - especially the Stretch 2 XL and Native Chief.

That said, they're not my favorites for EDC. The handle is just a bit too short for a solid 4-finger grip for my hand without grabbing the choil, which is one of my pet-peeves for any knife this size (it is not small). I'm fine with doing that on something like the Chap, because it actually is small.

Despite that - I really dig them and carry them often.

Best EDC? Nah, not for me. The knife I carry most often is a ZT 0609. It was an RJ Martin collab and didn't really end up being very popular then or now. What I love about it - it has the full 4-finger grip I want, carries like a Bugout, slim, blade design maximizes the cutting length vs the handle, places your index finger close to the cutting edge without needing a choil, thin blade stock and great cutting performance, great flipping action, and just has that feel-in-hand that makes it all work for me.

I love my Sebs, Inkosi, iMamba, TRMs, etc....but I still carry this one the most. You can't help who you love. ;)

That thing is sweet looking. I immediately looked em up on ebay!

Not playing that game ! 🧐

My current fav Spyderco folders , Manix2 , ball bearing lock ! :thumbsup:
I know what ya mean. The manix 2 is definitely in my top 3 for edc! (Native 5, para 3, manix 2) It has some of the best ergos for my hand that I've found.

IMO, the QC Drift and KUNWU Compadre are better than the stock Native 5 LW by pretty much any measure, if you look at similarly sized knives with a forward 50-50 finger choil.

I like the blade and the lock on the Native 5. However, the stock FRN scales and spoon clip are poorly designed, in my opinion. If you replace the scales and clip, then your Native 5 is now at the same price point as the knives listed above.

Oh yes the drift is a nice option. I've tried them twice now. Just never stuck around for some reason.

No it isn’t.
There.
I changed your mind.

Putting that differently...

Ok: 20% of the “blade length” is finger choil. That’s a 20% reduction in cutting right there. And with an overall length of 6.875 inches, that 2.44 inch cutting edge is only 35% of the overall length of the knife. So, you see, that’s only a 15% difference. And when you round down, as is only logical, given the various inefficiencies of design, that’s only a 1% difference, really, which falls into the margin of error, so that’s really 0% difference.

(Yes, I’ve been watching a lot of political speeches lately.)

Maybe when OP says EDC, he's referring to the Egregiously Detrimental Choil...

The choil is not stealing the cutting edge it is an extension of the handle 🙃 built into the tang of the knife.

Best thing about a Native is the name. Endura >> Native. If you don't believe it, ask me - I'll tell you it's so.

Best is obviously subjective. Part of that subjectivity rests in what we use a knife for and what we anticipate using a knife for. I can say unequivocally, looking back, that if I were limited to just one knife, a Leatherman would have served me best for everything I actually needed a knife/tool for. There would have been times that not being able to open it one handed would have been an issue, but those times would pale in comparison to the times I need a screwdriver, side cutter or pliers and didn't have them.

I suppose I am like many others here in that lingering in the back of my mind is the potential need for a fast draw and deployment for some kind of defensive purpose. That shapes what I carry, as does where I carry. With those factors in play, it really is hard to beat a Spyderco. Light, thin, relatively fast deploying and not overly expensive. A Dragonfly and Delica are in my pocket pretty often. Today I am carrying an Endela Blue Line special.

Aha. Well then, why not four choils? Think -- think, I say! -- how much you could choke up on the knife! ;)
