The Stove Conundrum - Observations & Thoughts

I prefer a fire and grate as well, but for those times where that is not feasible for whatever reason (extremely dry season, illegal, etc), I really love my Sierra Zip Stove. Though it is a small pain to get all the parts of the kit packed back together after use, it does pack into a fairly small and light kit. Even if the electrical parts fail, it still works pretty well as a small stove. But, that little fan system works great. I use little twigs, pine cones, old charcoal or left over coals from fires others leave behind, or whatever "fuel" I collect on the trail. Plus, with the advent of Lithium AA batteries, battery storage and run time is much better.

Car Camping: Coleman 502. 30+ years old and only changed a generator once.
Hiking: Trangia. Superlight and no parts to foul up.

I do have an MSR Pocket Rocket if I feel like changing it up a bit when I'm closer to home.
