I'm not trying to critique anyone's response (to be honest I didn't read them all), but there is two I'd like to address:
Dissolving the RAT Pack: IMO the RAT Pack is just a representation of like minded folks that are interested in a common theme: survival. Nothing more. If you don't want to be a part, don't join, simple as that.
Different requirements for the RAT Pack: I kind of like the 25 post deal (may argue that it could be a higher post count). I think Jeff's idea behind it was first, it doesn't require a lot of work on the mod's parts. Second, it ensures at least a minimal amount of participation in the discussion.
I've read criticism (more form other boards than BF) about the clique atmosphere here. Well, I think some have sand in their mangina. I like the "campfire" analogy used. That's exactly how it is. When you're the new guy around a campfire, you're not going to understand the humor, at least not of everyone. You're also going to take some ribbing -- going to happen. But isn't that a good thing? You get to see people who have developed a relationship with each other, and the ribbing is universal to groups dominated by type-A personalities (which you pretty much have to be to be interested in survival), and serves to spur people on to improve. So I'd definitely keep that.
I know Spark doesn't really like to do it, but maybe have a separate subforum like the HI Cantina. That way, we can keep the megathreads from cropping up, there is a place for off topic (meaning not survival related) threads, etc. That way, it doesn't clutter the main forum, but friends separated by thousands of miles can chat about things that aren't survival oriented.
I'd like to encourage "alternative" survival area threads. What I mean is, I really like Mistwalker's urban survival threads. I believe we have some Aussies -- how about some outback survival threads -- with lots of pics (not that I necessarily want to go to Australia, but the land and flora and fauna are so different, it's nice to see), some northern winter survival, etc. Not just jungle or tropical survival.
But overall, I don't see a hell of a lot to improve on here.
