The Sunday Picture Show... (9-18-2011)

A pretty simple share. This is the Cowbone 110 that was offered up on the web specials a few months ago. I really like the distressed leather sheath! I'm hoping to find something worthy of Leesa Martin's skills to have scrimshawed on this knife.

This week I have a Gold Series Woodsman 102 BKP. High polish blade, phenolic handle, and brass furniture. There were 3 knives in the series that I know of... 102, 103, and 119. I have yet to acquire a 119

WOW, what Beautiful knives and pics everyone... Thanks for sharing and making the SPS work for everyone...

It's okay to ask Questions and share info... That's how we all learn about Buck knives...

Thanks again everyone... ITE ...

How are your engraved Herbert?

JB, sorry for the bad picture. I hope the stamps are visible enough.
It seems that the stamps are the same. My falcon has no
stamp too.

The two others have no stamps also.

Best,
Haebbie

Congratusltions to your "Birds of prey"

A few more informations you find in the Model History From BCC "Special Projects"

I'm only missing the "Loon". And to answer your question: not all are engraved.
Fifty fifty have the limited ed. engraving. The engraving is 1-1000 at the birds of prey,
the geese and the ducks have 1-2000

Best,
Haebbie

Hi Herbert,

I have only seen the Loon scrim 500 once on ebay! I need to find one of each of the 1997 Water Fowl issue set. If I rember those are engraved on the back of the blade? You have a fantastic set there haebbie!, thanks for the photo.

This is the blade engraving that I'm talking about on the 1998 BOP set.
Here is my Snowy Owl blade engraving

Here is my Falcon & condor blade engraving

Here is my Eagle blade with no engraving

How are your engraved Herbert?

Herbert & All,

It looks like there was two different font styles used on the blade engravings of the "Birds of Prey" set. One font is a "larger" one thin line and it has straight lines (i'm calling it a block font-top blade). The second font is "smaller" and looks to be a double lined with slightly angled lines (i'm calling it an italic font-second blade). Then there are the no engraved blades from this set, see the third blade (I'm calling them over run knives).

Take a look at Herberts knives (post 48) & my knives and see if you see what I see? Interesting these knives have been in my display case for well over a year or more and I never saw this variation.

Other than different font on the engraving and some engraved, some not. Why are these called 'Birds of Prey'? With a Condor. Also, was there Geese and a Loon as he's saying?
Or just a Loon? Were these called 'Birds of Prey' as well or a different series name? DM

David,

There were two different 500 scrim issued LE sets.
In 1997 the waterfoul set of 3 knives was issued, Mallards, loon, and Wood Duck. 2000 sets were made. (no Geese)

In 1998 the Birds of Prey set of 4 knives was issued, Snowy Owl, CA Condor, Peregrine Falcon, and Eagle.

If you can get into the BCCI web site, Larry Oden has an artical in the March 08 news letter "Put Up Some Dukes", he talks about these two LE sets and many other SO, LE 500's. He ends the scrim info with the fact that an advertising flyer has a Duke with a scrim Giraffe scene and this verbage "I do not know if Buck made this knife or any other scrimshawed Dukes, but it is some-thing to keep in mind."

Any one out there have a copy of the Buck AD Larry O was talking about (Larry?). I for one would like to see it, or get a copy for my collection.

JB, I think there were changings over the time frame the knives were made.
Example: the Falcon has the same date code as the ducks (no geese? ;) ).
It would be interesting how many and which one was produced at what time.

And I don't think that the knives without a engraving are overruns. Your Falcon
has another date code than mine (97 and '98). If both were overruns I think both would have
the same date code. By the way: My Eagle has the date code from 1996!!

Best,
Haebbie

P.S.: JB, do you remember that we discussed this topic the first time two and a half years ago?

Haebbie, I do remember that thread. Also if you find any more of the waterfoul 500's let me know I don't have any of that set....yet;).

Herbert's 500 BOP set: Snowy Owl (98), CA Condor (97), Eagle (96), Falcon (97)

JB4570's 500 BOP set: Snowy Owl (98), CA Condor (97), Eagle (97), Falcon (98). The only one in my set with no engraving is the Eagle.

Buck has never controlled date coded blades and you often find LE's with the wrong date code for the LE issue. So the date codes on the blades mean nothing, just look at date code spread from our BOP sets. Over runs could and would be made with what ever blade was at hand. Maybe Joe would know more on this topic; or maybe Richard M. In the old thread you linked Richard said the only knife in his BOP set with the engraving is the Eagle (wonder what the date codes are on his set?).

Anyway this is good information. Those folks who must have a complete set of each variation now know they need to find 3 full sets.....LOL.
