The Sunday Picture Show... (9-8-2013)

No time to take pictures from my latest hunts. This is a photo from my 529s. I have no clue how many of this knives were offred with NS frame or with a brass frame. Thanks, Armand, for another picture show.

Nothing wrong with good scanner photos.........BUT get a photo editing program and tweak those scanner photos. Usually, you will brighten up the shadows. You can even learn to erase the bits of lint and the odd fingerprint you forgot about.......Once you screw up a few times you will get the hang of it. Always save the original, untouched........Only work on copies....300

Such as this.

Guys, Thanks for all your contributions to the show. I look forward to the SPS every week just to see at all these great and diverse Buck knives. It's an honor and a pleasure to both contribute and to observe (not to mention being a lot of fun). And of course, as always thank you Armand, for hosting it.

Sticking with my smaller Buck knife theme, here are a few Yellow Delrin 300's:

I ran across this old campfire coffeepot at a flea market. Goes great with my Buck coffee mug.

Craig's brilliant folding knife wrought this damage on key personnel @ Buck Headquarters.

301 303 and 309 Brown Bones c.1989-1991. No shields.
The 305 has eluded me for years while I've seen these three many times over, luck of the draw.....

Yes indeed, the 305's are the most difficult to find. But did you know that there are actually two variations of the brown bone slippies? The first or older (which is your 301) has brass liners and the jigging on the bone extends right up next to the bolsters; the second or newer (represented by your 303 and 309) has stainless steel liners and there is a slight gap of smooth bone between the bolsters and jigging on the handles. So just when one thinks that he has or is close to completing a collection of a series, something new comes along. Isn't collecting Bucks great??? :) And then, don't forget about the brown bone limited edition set in which the round LE inserts are set in the scales.

Dang, made me look!!! And these are kept in a cabinet right on the corner of my desk & never noticed. Actually that would make 4 versions of brown jig bone
brass liners (no shield)
stainless liners (no shield)
classic shield
Limited edition shield
Then there are 2 red bone sets, with and without engraved bolsters.

These are the bony 300s I know of.

Brown bones (some above) They come in two versions, because production fell on the transition from brass liner, two springs construction to three spring stainless liners, etc construction. That would be eight knives total.

Then brown bone with circular insert. Five knives, the really hard one to find is added , the BBone 310 with whittler blade.

Then Red bones with K,B, and Hammer shield with four knives

Then Red bones with K,B,H shield and engraved bolsters with four knives.

What about the 312 and 314 jigged bone issue only two knives.

If anyone can think of more versions I would like to hear. Desoto I have never seen a BB with a Knife, Bolt and Hammer shield.

Almost forgot this little guy. Still looking for pink & lavender.
Taken on my desk under fluorescents, not ideal.

Like 300 Bucks, I have never seen a brown bone with a shield. Could you please post a photo of the end label of the tan box that I presume the knife with the shield came in. The reason I ask is that I also have both a similar 301 and 303 in similar boxes and just by looking at the knives, one would swear that they are indeed a brown bone; however, the end label on my boxes state that they are red bone rather than brown bone and they both do appear to have a VERY, VERY slight red tint to them.

Standard 301 Stockman box, no evidence that there was a sticker on it. Are your shields shaped the same? The standard and engraved redbones have different shield shapes.

Yes, the shields on mine have the same shape as does yours. Furthermore, the shape of both shield appears, at least to me, to be identical to the shape of the shield on the 301 with the engraved bolsters posted above by 300 Bucks. The end label of the box that I have has the knife designated as a 301RB.

First off, sorry Armand if we hijacked the Sunday thread. We are playing with our 300s. Hope we entertain the rest of you to some degree.

Shields - Shields changed shape at a certain time , It was when Buck took over production of the knives from Camillus, they went to small nail nics and rounded end shields.. The primary factor here Desoto is that neither Tin or I have ever seen a BBone with a shield. That does not mean they don't exist, one reason being you got one. Think like a detective, the date on Desoto's knife is 1989, lets see when the dates on the BBones and the RedBones are. Let's see when the rounded edge shields showed up, it was 1986, after that all shields were rounded. Notice Desoto's knife has a brass spring rivet showing, no rivet on BBones, only on RedBones post 86 shield. The older looking shields could be another case of using up left over parts.

What type of liner and how many springs does that shield knife have?.

In the mean time, Tin is either correct on the really dark RedBone or the knife is just special. A BBone with a shield and a brass spring rivet. I bet it only has two springs and brass liners. Evidence already shows it is not related to any of the original Brown Bones that started this pirate discussion. They have no spring rivets showing. Could be a redbone they used some left over brown scales on...

Red Jigged Bone - 1989
Brown Jigged Bone Type 1 - 1989
Brown Jigged Bone Type 2 - 1992

So Desoto with all this information, its up to you to really scan the knife. 300

2 springs and brass liners.
I laid all the 300 series BB knives I have (6) for my wife to examine under bright light.... she has better color perception.
She says the one with the shield is the only one she could detect any red tinge to when she looked at the scale edges.

I'll defer to the masters but I'm not gonna change my inventory label....still looks brown to me... :p

300, Tin Sue and DeSotosky, this is great info for all of us here on the SPS... I need to find my BBone knives... Keep the info coming... :)
