The Sunday Picture Show... (9-8-2013)

Well, you scanned. I would think that with the deal being the deal. Tin is correct in that it is a redbone, but with a brown scale. Does than make sense, in other words during the assembly of redbones someone slipped in some only very slightly red scales. So, I think Tin will agree, what you have is - a one of a kind. Some might call it a factory error but I don't since it is only a bone shade issue. I bet a good soak in some strong Rit dye and we all could have a red one that was more brown. My bottom line statement is that there was never a version in brown jigged bone scale with a factory placed shield. You have a brown scale put on during the red bone run. A one of a kind.

The purple and the two last versions with replaced German made (Wenger stamped on opposite side to Patent) scissors are the hardest to find. There is a little plug of scale material that sticks thru hole in the liner to hold up the scissors so you can get a nail in the notch to open them. It that breaks off the scissors will go deep into the blade well........a bad thing.

The last two production models were black sawcut scales and red sawcut scales with Wenger stamped scissors. Previous versions were all smooth scaled and had un-marked scissors. Here are the two reds for comparison. There is a history of the clipper written in the BCCI website. Go to model history section.

At this point, I'm not sure what to call these as they are an odd color indeed. If you recall, in one of my earlier posts, I stated that one would swear that they appear to be brown bone at first glance even though the box labels them as red bone. However, the color is definitely not the same as the true "brown" bones. That said, I do not think that some slightly red, but actually brown, scales were simply slipped in during a red bone run as suggested by 300 Bucks as I have seen far too many of these over the years. In fact I have a complete set (301, 303, 309, and 305) in this darker color that were all purchased way back when from SMKW so Desoto's is definitely not one of a kind. I think it is more likely that the variation in the two red colors resulted from two different dye batches. Perhaps, as 300 states, the first lot of bone was left in the dye to long and came out much darker but was used anyway. And perhaps, the good folks at Buck even had the same discussion that we are currently having as to whether these were red or brown so a second lot was dyed for a shorter period of time resulting in the lighter red color. This was all such a long time ago that I suspect we will never know exactly how this came to be. So, it would appear that these may well remain another of those strange unexplained Buck offerings, and while Desoto is going to keep his in the brown bone category, I plan to keep mine in the red bone pile. All's well. :)
