Help keep the tradition alive. Feel free to click that 'LIKE' but lets not let it replace discussing and complimenting each others knives. DeSotoSky (Roger Yost)

On These Days, April 12-13 1861, The Battle of Fort Sumter. The attack on Fort Sumter marked the official beginning of the American Civil War. A war costing 620,000 lives lasted almost 4 years to the day until on April 9th, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox.
The Fort is named for Thomas Sumter, a Brigadier-General during the Revolutionary War and later a South Carolina Senator. The fort was built in response to the War of 1812 which had exposed the inadequacy of existing American coastal fortifications to defend against naval attacks. Construction began in 1829 on an artificial island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor. The fort was never fully completed or armed as designed even by the start of the Civil War in 1861.
Context Lincoln's election in 1860 threatened the culture and economies of the slave states. In response, South Carolina announced seccession on December 20, 1860, followed by 6 more states in February 1861. The secceding states moved to seize Federal forts and property in the South. President Buchanan refuses to comply with a request to surrender the Forts at Charleston. There was a small Federal garrisson of less than 100 men led by Major Anderson based at Fort Moultrie. Designed to defened against a Naval attack, Fort Moultrie could not be defended from a land attack and Anderson secretly moves his garrisson on December 26th to the island Fort Sumter, not yet completed and poorly provisioned. Fort Sumter was at the center of political wrangling for months. A supply ship sent by President Buchanan was driven off. Lincoln took office in March. The South sent a delegation to Washington offering to buy the Federal properties which Lincon refused not recognizing the Confederacys legitimacy. On April 4th Lincoln announces his intention to resupply Fort Sumpter and in response Davis tells Brauregard to take Fort Sumter by force if necessary.
The Battle Starting the morning of April 12th bombardment of Fort Sumter from the shore batteries begins. The shore batteries had the advantage of being able to fire on the fort from all sides, ability to elevate and lob into the fort, and the advantage of supplies. Fort Sumter had heavy guns on the open top level but that would have exposed his men to shore fire so he did not man them. After 36 hours, Major Anderson struck his colors and prepared to evacuate the fort. There were no casualties on either side during the battle. Ironically, not during the battle but during a 100 gun salute as they prepared to leave a spark innited a pile of cartridges killing two and seriously wounding four other members of the gun crew, these were the first military fatalities of the Civil War. The salute was stopped at fifty shots. Major Anderson and his men were allowed to board a ship returning them to New York where they were greeted as heroes. Below is Major Andersons report to the Secretary of War.

Thursday, April 18
Hon. S. Cameron, Sec'y. of War, Washington, D. C.
Sir—Having defended Fort Sumter for thirty-four hours, until the quarters were entirely burned, the main gates destroyed by fire, the gorge wall seriously injured, the magazine surrounded by flames, and its door closed from the effects of the heat, four barrels and three cartridges of powder only being available, and no provision but pork remaining, I accepted terms of evacuation, offered by Gen. Beauregard, being the same offered by him on the 11th inst., prior to the commencement of hostilities, and marched out of the fort Sunday afternoon, the 14th inst., with colors flying and drums beating, bringing away company and private property, and saluting my flag with fifty guns.
ROBERT ANDERSON
Major First Artillery.

I have an 11se that I bought during the pandemic, iirc. Its my first and only Apple product. Its been flawless except that Siri quit talking to me. I believe her last words were, "You know what you did"Thank you for the SPS again. That 303 is something else. I'll just have to view today as my phone died Tuesday.Received a new phone Wed, but because I couldn't remember an Apple code I'm locked out until this Wed. I've been using my computer to view BF but no access to pictures. Anyhow great show so far.![]()
My late friend Dave always wore overalls. When one of his sons got married, his wife died a pair black for him to wear at the weddingOh, I don't have a problem carrying my users. If I have to dress up to go somewhere, then I don't belong there in the first place, and I ain't going.
