Hello and welcome to the Sunday Picture Show. Share your Buck knives with others by posting pictures of them here. New or old, plain or custom, user or safe queen, one or a collection, we love to see them all. This weekly tradition was started in 2010 by ItsTooEarly (Armand Hernandez) and Oregon (Steve Dunn). Help keep the tradition alive. Feel free to click that 'LIKE' but lets not let it replace discussing and complimenting each others knives. Above all, enjoy the show. DeSotoSky (Roger Yost)

On This Day, February 15, 1898, an explosion sank the battleship USS Maine in the Havana Cuba harbor killing 266 of the 354 crew members. A Navy Board of Inquiry ruled the ship had been sunk by an explosion of the forward powder magazine caused by a mine. There was dissenting opinion that the ships magazines had been ignited by a coal bunker fire. Ordered in 1886 and launched 1890 she had a length of 324 ft and a beam of 57 ft. The main battery was 4 x 10 in guns mounted in two turrets. Additionally 6 x 6 in guns, 7 x 6 pounders and 4 torpedo tubes. Officially a friendly visit, the USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American citizens and considerable financial interests in Cuba because of rioting in Havana during a revolt against Spanish rule. The incident was a contributing factor to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War several months later. Sensationalist newspaper reporting or "yellow journalism"' whipped up anti Spanish sentiment, exaggerating Spanish atrocities. This played into a hawkish Congress interested in American global expansion prompting President McKinley to act, The war was brief, April to August, 1898. The United States took over Spanish interests in Cuba as a protectorate, sovereignty over Puerto Rico, Guam, and purchased the Philippines for $20 million. Cuba gained independence in 1902 but the United States maintained some military presence into the 1930's. The war was a decisive victory establishing the United States as a global power and ending Spain’s colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere.
Status of the USS Maine: A cofferdam was built around the wreck in 1911. The hull was patched, re-floated, then towed to sea and sunk at a depth of 3,600 feet. The ship's main mast is in Arlington National Cemetery. About 1,000 markers were made from metal salvaged from the wreck and distributed throughout the country.
Other USS Maines
.....(BB-10) (1902–1920)
battleship.
.....(BB-69) A planned Montana class battleship, cancelled 1943
.....(SSBN-741) (1994–Present) An Ohio-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine.
Guantanamo Bay Naval Base: The Naval base was established on Cuba under a 1903 treaty with a perpetual lease for the annual rent of $4,085. It has never increased. The Cuban government, after the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro, has refused to cash these checks to protest the U.S. presence.

Thanks Roger for the History lesson and the Sunday Picture Show. The Hearst Newspapers fanned the flames leading to military action. T. R. Roosevelt jumped in with both feet. The BuckCote blade was chisel sharpened; the zipper was not.

Here’s a 692 chisel FB. The factory Blem I’m pretty sure is because the ion fusion coating didn’t take. It’s been used, not by me. The pictures make it look like it look worse than it is. I doubt it’s the factory edge. Can’t decide if I should send it back to Buck’s spa and have them put a double edge on it or just sharpen and clean it up the best they can.
Only reason I bought it was for the sheath, leather 100th anniversary. Which wasn’t original with this knife.
I’m guessing this knife was made from a leftover blade from Cabela’s rubber handled edition.
I have one question would glass beating the blade take the rest of the finish off? Or maybe Cerakote the blade an olive drab.
