The Sunday Picture Show (June 7th, 2026)

Thanks for hosting the SPS Roger! Years ago, I lent my buddy a book on the Battle of Midway. He was not much of a history buff. He was part way through it when he said "I thought we won this battle, didn't we?." He was at the part were the US was losing plane after plane after plane. I reassured him that it was an overwhelming victory. We owe a lot to those men who flew missions with little hope of returning, either from being shot down or running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.
In all my reading yesterday I couldn't help thinking about the Japanese pilots returning from distant sorties against the American fleet only returning to find their carriers gone and no where to land. I wonder how many just had to ditch into the ocean, yes, they were the enemy, and we left them with no hope of returning also. If all 4 Japanese carriers were sunk that would translate to a 100% aircraft loss.
addendum: 248 according to Google. The vast majority—nearly 147 planes—went down with the four sunken fleet carriers, while roughly 101 were lost fighting in the air or ditching in the ocean. I am surprised how many planes were on the carriers and not airborne when the carriers went down.

jb4570 jb4570 Love that 118. It is the only Buffalo Chip Flint I don't have. They turn up occasionally but no longer at a hobbiest price. I should have been more aggressive completing the set years ago. I always think there's time until there isn't... 🤣
Same here. I sure do want one to complete my collection. Prolly never happen.
