Hello and welcome to the Sunday Picture Show. Share your Buck knives with others by posting pictures of them here. New or old, plain or custom, user or safe queen, one or a collection, we love to see them all. This weekly tradition was started in 2010 by ItsTooEarly (Armand Hernandez) and Oregon (Steve Dunn). Help keep the tradition alive. Feel free to click that 'LIKE' but lets not let it replace discussing and complimenting each others knives. DeSotoSky (Roger Yost)

1891 painting of the steamship Portland

125 Years Ago, November 26-27, 1898, The Portland Gale.
Named for the passenger steamship Portland that was lost in the storm, more than 150 other boats and ships as well as at least 400 lives were lost. The 281' long wood hulled Portland was launched in 1889 and ran passenger service between Boston Massachusetts and Portland Maine. She was thought to be well built and had a good service record. Leaving Boston on Saturday evening the 26th, many of the passengers were returning from spending the Thanksgiving holiday in Boston. The Portland encountered hurricane force winds and was probably lost Sunday morning. Shallow draft and large wheel houses on each side of the hull did not make for good handling in rough seas. Over the next few days some bodies and a huge amount of debris began to wash up on the beaches. An exact count is not known as the passenger list went down with the ship but total loss of life was estimated at 200. Her loss hastened the use of steel hulled propeller driven ships in off shore applications. The use of side wheel steamers did continue but were regulated to more protected runs. The wreck site was located in 1989 and photographed using a ROV in 2002. In 2005 a team of 5 highly skilled divers did visit the wreck, a considerable technical feet as she is 460' deep.

Random pick from the cabinet. Model 278 Folding Alpha Hunter with "Stacked Antlers". Handle is Imitation Ivory, Buck speak for plastic? Has the Idaho date logo but no model number on the blade. This knife was a Smoky Mountain project and serialized to 500. There are other knives in this handle type but different graphics. I think there are about 3 or 4 total. Hopefully we will see some of the others on the show.
