The Survive! Never Say Die! Chat Thread

^--- Thanks Bud! What was I thinking...

Yes make that BOTH a GSO-8 AND a folder!!!

I like Guy's knives; have had three. The one that I have now is a GSO 3.5 in 3V; wonderful knife.
Yes, I'd like to see his folder come out soon.

Man it's getting harder and harder to wait for the Starter runs. I'm usually pretty patient, but I guess I'm really looking forward to a couple of these new runs. (Not a whine, by the way. Just excited.) The 4.7 coming was the reason my brain used not to go for a 5, but I'm starting to think I need a 5 just to tide me over :D

I hear ya, Hard Knocks! I'm trying to use the tactic of "forgetting" about my orders. I have a 3.5 that will hopefully be shipping soon to help with the wait of the starters.

Go for a 5! Or if you can't justify the full cost, go for a factory second!

Hey Survivors! It's me, the laffable idiot Springy!

In the interest of keeping this chat thread a happening place and also because I feel this would be the most appropriate place to ask ridiculous noob questions, I'm going to ask.. um.. a ridiculous noob question.

Could you fine folks explain to me and any other S!K inductees what 'starters' mean and perhaps even the overall way Guy releases his runs/series of blades? I ask because I'm uncontrollably keen on getting some of these pieces of highly functioning art works but unlike other brands it occurs to me if I were to attempt to obtain a particular knife that I might have to wait whilst Guy makes that batch and even then I may miss out due to high demand. Is this accurate? I'm going to sign up for the S!K newsletter so I'm well informed but until then I'd love to hear from some experienced Survivors! and how they obtained their blades. Thanks folks.

I shall now retake my place by the fire, placing a stoker in there until it gets red hot so I can poke holes in plastic. And whilst I wait I'm going to lick this window..

Springy..

Its not too bad. The system works like this. To increase efficiency and production speed S!K essentially did the knife version of a kick starter. By purchasing and paying in advance of a runs production, it has allowed the company to invest in more production machinery and improve on quality of products "in house". Say you want a GSO 12, but are worried that all the dudes sitting in their moms basements covered in burrito stains hitting the refresh button will order 10 knives each to sell on fleabay. Well worry no more. Buying into the Survive model of your choice will reserve your knife for you when the run happens. No worries, no muss, no burrito stains.
Can I trust that the company won't go bust before I get my hardware? The starter program has already been active for 2 months. They have the machines, they have the manpower and they have a proven track record. You will get your stuff. Hope that clears it up a bit for you. Read their web page and be active on this sub forum. You will catch up quick ☺.

Springy! You may have gotten the impression already that getting a SURVIVE! knife is not like getting a Kabar or ESEE that are big companies and have a lot of stock ready to go at several retailers. Getting S! knives can require a monk-like level of patience.

Since I've been seriously following SURVIVE! the knives have been available a few models at a time, often with some wait between things being available. Signing up for the newsletter will help you stay informed. Buy and Ellie have also been getting better at checking in here, updating Facebook and having current information on their website.

The starter campaign was like a way for people to preorder knives and get Guy money to buy materials and supplies and catch up with demand. The knives sold in the starter we're new or updated models.

Here is some text about the starter from their site. This campaign ended in April, so if you want to order directly from the site, you'll have to wait until new models are released after the starter run.

"After the GSO-5.1 sold out in record time we received a lot of messages from customers. Most of them were incredibly frustrated. Well we want you to know that we are frustrated too. SURVIVE! is currently a young company struggling to keep up with demand. We need to grow so we can get rid of the "out of stock" phrase that is plaguing our website. In order to do so we need working capital to invest in larger production runs and equipment to give us more control over the quality of each finished product. We are ready to do the work but we could really use your help.

The SURVIVE! Starter is designed as a crowd funding source to help us grow our production capabilities. With your investment we will be able to increase the size and frequency of our production runs, meaning we will have more models in stock for longer periods of time. Our goal is to end the "Out of Stock" notices completely. We will also use the investment funds to buy some much needed finishing equipment. This will give us the opportunity to have more oversight at the end of every production run, decreasing the amount of Factory 2nds and increasing the overall fit and finish. With your help we will be able to make a better knife, much faster.

But it isn't only about us. We know a lot of you would be happy with just being able to reserve your spot in the production line. But we want to make it worth your patience, so we have come up with some ways to pay you back for your generosity. Read more about both investment options for full reward details!

There are two ways you can take part in this investment opportunity: Buy a Knife or Buy Store Credit."

Hey Springy, though the starter is over, you can still order the models that were in the starter, with free upgrades, until they start production (e.g., you can't order the 5.1 anymore, but you could order the 4.7, its next in line, or any of the others). The only problem there is you're back of the line from all the people who've already pre-ordered and it's still going to be quite a wait I believe.

I would think your best bet to getting one in hand would be a 4.1 second or 5.0 second, as those blades are already made up and they just need to process through the orders. I'd say it's still going to be a month or two wait though. You could also get one from the secondary market of course, but there's definitely a premium on them there. If you look at the price of the 4.1 second on the website, I'd say that's fantastic pricing from what I've seen and I honestly don't think they'll ever be that low again.

Gentlemen, thank you kindly for that information and your worldly experience. Greatly appreciated. That did answer a lot of questions I had. As stated, I'm going to sign up for the newsletter and I may even Email Guy and Ellie directly to talk to them about investing in their company. I would really like to help, even in a small way, to their growth.

As I've mentioned in another thread I am really keen on getting a 7/7, a 4.1 and a Necker II. Now, I would be quite content just to start with a 3.5 which would complement one of my larger blades very well out in the bush. Ideally and ultimately I would like to couple a 3.5 with the 7/7 but this can be down the track.

Once again folks you have given me some insightful information and I appreciate it a great deal. I truly can't wait to get one (or two or three or..) of Guys knives and be one of your clan. Shhh don't tell the BeckerHeads though :D

Hey Springy, great sense of humor man!

You probably already know to troll the exchange here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/891-For-Sale-Production-Fixed-Blades-%28Individual%29

There was a 5.1 on it this morning, lasted 14 minutes. But you can always burn plastic with your poker while watching the EX :)

Haha thanks Knocks. Yes, I am by definition, one peculiar bugger :) I have looked at the EX on numerous occasions specifically for S!K's and have found a few. Alas everyone on there seems to only want to sell CONUS which is a pain but hey, if I buy from Guy then I'm helping him out directly. Going to have to be patient though as knifey wifey needs a new car and ze blade budget has diminished and been reduced to watching others buy knives. Pffft vehicular transport. Who needs it. Damn it woman, ride a kangaroo to work!

"Package shipped to you" makes me happy...

Ok, just a pair of extra handles, but nevertheless... :)

Helps tide a guy over while waiting on the bigger (sharper) stuff, too :) Handles for which model ni1s? I thought it was really good of Guy to offer extra handles for the older models for awhile
