The Survive! Never Say Die! Chat Thread

Absolutely! I hate using bug spray about worse than getting bit. Luckily we've had a good year with very little for mosquitoes. It's been wet, so I'm not sure why that is, but we're sure enjoying it.

Really nice the whole trip. We did have a bit of wind hit the river one evening, but nothing too bad. Kept the bugs off. We caught enough bluegill and smallmouth for a pretty good fish fry, so that was nice. I was fish hungry.

That's some beautiful scenery HK!
Bluegill sounds so good right now!

Thanks bud, and the fish did hit the spot.

As usual... I am jealous of HKs adventures!

Looks awesome

I know how much I like seeing pics of all your guys outings. I'm looking forward to the next installment of big trout pics

This is my girl's last year before going on to college, and she's our youngest, so we've been trying to cram as much in as possible. I know the juggling act between time and money, but I just want to encourage all of the parents here to get the kiddos out when you can. It's amazing how much more we talked when there was no internet or cell reception over Memorial Day weekend. I'd like to think she even learned a skill or two :D

I'm glad you got some QT, those moments mean everything.

On a much lighter note, if you Survivors already owned an old 4.1 and 5.1 and a new 4.7 with a 12 on the way, what would be next for you between what's currently available for pre-order: The 4.5 Bushcraft, 8 or 10? Those handle options like ghost jade, orange/red/blue and black and camo g10 on the 8 sure would be cool. And according to Guy's write up -

"The SURVIVE! GSO-8 is a brand new model to the line up and came into existence because of Bladeforums member demand and design input. A group of Bladeforums members were looking for a camp knife that would be useful for a variety of general tasks but still large and robust enough to be chop-able; Something that would have much of the capability of the larger GSO-10 but in a more compact package. This design began as a creative challenge but since its completion the GSO-8 has quickly become one of our favorite designs. A huge thanks to the Bladeforums community for helping to make this design a reality."

- it's the more versatile blade as well. But 10 inches...who wasn't ever impressed by 10 inches?

So many jokes... Based on what you have/want I'd vote for the 8. Though the 4.5 could be a silent thriller. Would the next be a "want" or are you trying to fill a role. If it's a want, just close your eyes and think about which one gets you most excited!

lol..

After further contemplation, with the 4.5 bushcraft coming in at .115" (thinner than 90+% of my neck knives) it seems to me the ultimate bush lineup is the 12, 8 and 4.5. The 12 is obvious for the biggest of the big boy chores, and I wouldn't wanna be the fellow batoning a pile of fire wood with a 12, so the 8 fits in nicely as well for numerous reasons. The thin profile and exaggerated tip of the 4.5 will conquer the whittling and filleting. So Bushcraft this month, 8 next month. :D

For real?! I hate getting bit! I itch like crazy! Ever try Picaridin? It's been a staple in the UK outdoor industry for at least a decade. Deet has the potential to ruin your leather, sunglass lenses and many other things.

Whenever I put Benzocaine on a bug bite on my arm or leg or somewhere else, my lips instantaneously become completely numb. I don't even wanna think about the transdermal properties of Deet.

I don't think I've ever tried Picaridin. Strange phenomenon, the longer I stay out, the more pests are naturally repelled. After a few days you hardly see any mosquitoes. Or neighbors, for that matter.

I think all the folks that end up with the 4.5 are going to be really pleased. It should make a heck of a cutting tool for actual knife tasks.

Tequila was the trick to avoid problems with mosquitos when I lived in Mexico. Keep a baseline level in the bloodstream, mosquitos left you alone.

Hahaha!!! I snorted when that last bit caught me by surprise!

I'm with Phixt, but bites are the worst....... whether it's mosquitos here in Wisconsin or black flies up in Michigan.... no thanks!

I'm curious about picaridin now, too. I used to not mind deet because it worked so well, but I'm not really into the idea any more for myself and especially my kids.

Tequila sounds like an ideal solution except it gives me the worst hangovers. Now if bourbon or rum could keep the bugs away.............. not only would I be pest free, but my jokes all get funnier and my singing improves dramatically!

I was once told the only two real factors that cause certain people to get more bug bites than others is a) blood type b) alcohol consumption with all the added sugars. Drinking custom micro brews all night might differ from loading oneself with tequila or everclear lol, the mosquito would be hammered just from your aura. I never noticed the bugs chillin out on me after a few days. I do notice things clear up though, like my mind and acne.

I'm with HK I hate bug spray. Would rather use long clothes than bug spray. However with the recent uptick in serious mosquitos transmitted virus in our area I did pick up some this year. Was rated #1 by consumer reports, it's the sawyers brand with picaridin, so we shall see

Oh yes, the ticks. I pretreat all my clothes, my pack, my polycro, my down quilt, hat n everything with Permethrin (I spray Sawyer Picaridin on my skin) and let it dry for 4 hours - never apply wet Permethrin to your skin. My dad got lyme's disease from a deer tick, so did his buddy and his dog. I had a deer tick in my thigh in May '15, noticed it the following day and got antibiotics right away. You can't mess around with the ticks anymore. They're everywhere. Look at what the beetle and moth are doing to pine and ash trees. Things are changing.

Thanks for that redwood. I'm a fan of Sawyer, so maybe I'll give that a go.

Very true. Lyme disease is rough stuff, I hope to never get it. Ticks are bad here in the spring, but generally taper off quickly with the hot weather. You are smart to be safe Phixt.

I learned of Permethrin from a nurse when I went to get my shots for international travel (to Nicaragua). I treated my clothes and pack, and then wore insect repellent discs on my clothes for good measure. The mosquitoes down there were ferocious, but I counted only 7 bites after 10 days, compared to literally hundreds on many other members of the team who also wore the discs. Permethrin made a believer of me.

Until this thread, I'd never heard of Picaridin. Thanks for the lead. About 70% of my dirt time happens when I am bow hunting or scouting elk or mule deer. Scent is a no-no. Do any of you hunters have any feedback about using this while hunting?

We don't have many ticks in AZ, nor chiggers, but gnats, mosquitoes, flies, and meat bees are abundant. Anything I can do to repel pests without repelling game is interesting to me.

I think I've posted this before but my son contacted Lymes a handful 3-4 years ago. My pride and joy is usually a fireball but was complaining of being sore and couldn't even make it up the steps to his room. He joints swelled then fever hit. Doctors didn't know what it was. My wife is an RN and told them to check for Lymes the first time but they didn't. Second go round she insisted and sure as shit Lymes. For a few days I thought I might lose my boy. I injected antibiotics through a pick line for a month or so. This Sunday he turns 11. My select baseball playin, knife loving, shooting, hunting, fishing buddy has no effects from it now.

God damn! He had a pic line? Im glad he is doing well. Thats f'n serious if they had to give him one of those

hunter, that sounds horrendous. Not just for your son, but your whole family. So glad to hear he's completely better now!
