The Survive! Wish List - reasonable

G10 can be perfectly grippy when it's not taken to a high finish.

As far as my Survive! wish list.. I just want to have stock on hand so I can order it if and when I want it :) I really hope the starter will get Survive! the funding needed.

Love to see a 3.5 grow to 4.1 blade length full flat grind. Great utility hunter, light weight. One can only wish. Also skeleton under the handle scales. Super!

I'd like a 'magnum' handle option, so I can get a 4.7 like palm swell on a new 6.0.

one of the things i like about the removable scales is that you can mod them, but if down the road they offered different ergo options as well that would be cool too! Presumably it would be as simple as setting of the solidworks and then ordering enough to make economy of scale work?

From the lineup up picture, it looks like almost all the blade shapes are very similar except the bushcraft knife. What is the primary use for the wide blade and basic spear point design? Who is the primary user? And is there hope for a hunting type blade sometimes?

Directly from their site....
***The SURVIVE! Bushcraft Knife (GSO-4.5) is a brand new model for 2015 and is designed specifically to excel at slicing and carving tasks. The blade is notably thinner for a knife of this size, with a fine cutting edge for a deeper bite and greater slicing efficiency. The blade tip is also more acute than other SURVIVE! models, for more effectively handling delicate carving work. The handle shape and length have been optimized to reduce hand fatigue and eliminate hot spots during extended carving sessions.***

Great questions! My observations are: the tall blade gives the knife more power at any lenght, the spear point/drop point gives the knife more belly/cutting surface and the thickness gives it a ton of strength. I can make bow divots, dig and pry with the point. I use my med to larger GSOs for chopping, wood work/carving, wood processing and camping. I use my small to med knives for some of the same as well as around the house performing light to heavy duty cutting chores and EDC. GSOs are not bushcrafter knives nor would I call them military or tactical knifes. But you can do fine carving, notching, try stick or make a spoon with these knives. I am pretty sure you could use any of Guy's knives as a weapon, though they are a bit heavy for that. I have heard S!Ks being described as: EDC knives, camping knives, field knives, survival knives and in a pinch hunting/skinning knives. I think the best description of them would be called a utility knife.

I've never skinned with one but others in this forum have. You should ask them about their experiences. I bet that Guy will make one in the future but I am sure you'll be able to use the 4.7 or the 4.1 to skin and bone a carcass.

Thank you for that. I do have a 4.5 and a 6 on order... I am very excited about the 4.5. For camping and carving.. We love making spoons and bowls from wood. I am asking because the tall blade appears to have "extra" metal over and above what I have had on any knives I have used... So I was wondering if the extra strength is needed for some of the tasks that people use them for. And if so, what tasks would that be? The 6 looks like it will handle anything a reasonable person would ever think to do with a knife and then some... But none of them look to be really designed to be a big game hunters "main" knife... I think that would be neat in 3V.

Brian, I don't know enough about hunting, but what are you looking for in a knife? You don't think a 3.5 or 4.1 would work well enough for game processing?

Guy's designs don't seem overbuilt to me like a TOPS Power Eagle or an ESEE 5. They are definitely built to handle any type of hard use like batoning or chopping, but that tall blade makes the cutting edge relatively thin compared to some other designs from other companies. I don't have a mora to compare them to, but I've been really happy with how my 5 and 3.5 handle wood cutting and carving.

The taller blade does make it harder to do some of the finer wood crafting tasks. For instance I could make a spoon but it was hard to make the bowl - though this might be my lack of skill. But I think you'll like the 4.5. It'll be interesting to see how it cuts vs a scandi blade. I ordered one too and I am looking forward to comparing it to my L.T. Wright GNS scandi grind.

I think the extra metal translates into more chopping power and I think you'll notice that weight will assist with push cuts. I definitely notice it for hard work. For instance I thought I grabbed my 7/7 to cut a 1.5" old vine that was killing one of my trees. I ended up grabbing my 5.1 and it went through the vine like butter. Earlier that day I was using that same 5.1 to make notches and a spoon out of a dowel. Anyway, I think the extra power makes a difference. But if the taller blade becomes cumbersome I switch to one of my 4.1s which I feel is the best 4 to 4.5"" camping knife I own.

I have a 6 and it's a beast! I prefer the choil of the 7/7 but either blade will serve if a large blade is required. They are not heavy knives and you can work all day with them which is important because I feel they are safer and easier to control. And they can chop, baton, carve cut and can do fine work very well. I bought several larger Busse knives thinking that they were the ultimate 6" to 8" knives. I was pretty disappointed to find that, at least for me, I already had the ultimate large knife in the 7/7 with the 6 as a close second. I batoned a bunch of larger seasoned oak with 3 different Busse knives and my 7/7. They all batoned well and the 1/4" thick SFNO was the best at batoning but it's too big and heavy for any light or fine tasks and it's really only good for chopping and batoning. I had to get the blade re-profiled to get the SFNO to do any decent carving, cutting and shaving but that didn't matter because, as mentioned above, I found it to be too heavy to work with for any length of time. Not so with the 7/7 or the 6, they both came out of the box ready for anything and I could work with them for either for long periods of time. RE: "a big game hunters "main knife" not yet but the 4.1 could fill in if the main knife failed. If you want a man's knife for looks, the Busse SFNO take it HANDS DOWN, it's just bad-ass looking. But the 7/7 takes it for functionality every day of the week and I believe that Jim Bowie would be happy with either GSO.

You dont have to have an account to watch the video. Sorry about my big ass head getting in the way!

Here is a video of me filetting rainbow trout that I caught. Check out how precise the 5.1 is. Couldnt have done better with a dedicated filet knife. Keep in mind that these knives are designed as multi use blades... Sharp enough to shave up for a hot date, thin enough to use in the kitchen if you had to, thick and tough enough to baton and use hard if you have to, all while maintaining comfortable ergos that you can use all day.

Not bad for a knife that's about 5x thicker than a filet knife!

Yep! It helps that I am a skilled filletter, if that is a word. The 4.5 will probably be damn near as good as a kitchen knife for food processing.

I know I wished for a S!K Tomahawk, but I would really like to see an S!K folder and thin 3V, nessmuk style hunting knife. Similar to a Busse Hog Muk, but with Guy's theme.

I bet you would be a wizard with the GSO-20..:D I agree with all the other thoughts as well. I have a fascination with the nessmuk style blades. and a folder would be really exciting.

I would like a GSO that is based on the British golok. Similar to a strider Rogue Warrior 3 or the Svord British Golok. I'm having issues uploading pics today. Google image those blades to see what I am talking about.

I think it should grow to a 5 with the full flat grind!

How about a 4.5", .125" to .155" thick scandi...oh wait the 4.7 should fit the bill nicely!

I chose this thread as this idea is a little more out there and not anything I'd expect to be made by Guy, but I was just watching the Miller Brothers Blades M8 test videos (again). I'd love a SURVIVE! version of a 6-8 inch blade that is four or five 16ths of an inch thick. With the right geometry it could do knife stuff and be used as a light hatchet. Also the need to destroy a car door or zombie might arise and you'd be good to go.
