The Sweet 16 GAW Winner and Non-Winner picked!

OK I'll fix the post even though i talked about a light saber. Here's a nice Schrade I have carried for years. It's very pocket worn at this time and one of my favorites.

Please Count me in. Cause i love the fact that you put in the rules (rule #1) that you will send something out of spite to the winner if their entry was "not an entry post"

I'd love to be in! My favorite pattern is congress but I have never had the chance on a half like that!

My grail knife had been always a lockback whittler, Case Bose is much too expensive for me. Few month ago I spotted Fight'n Rooster on the action site and got it.
It stand up to all my expectation and more. I was truly lucky that day.

Ummmmmm I'm from a foreign port and I'm looking for a guy that carries a lightsaber. goes by the name of Luke. By the way nice pocket knife, I'd like to drop by and see it. OK?

So if you want to try this knife you have to meet the following criteria:

If you don't know what to say, you can talk about a knife that was surprisingly good OR talk about your favorite memory involving a traditional knife.

I think we can do without the non-knife content.

Here's my R16.

So if you want to try this knife you have to meet the following criteria:
I'd certainly like a shot at that half-congress, Doc! I appreciate your generosity!
But can I meet the criteria?

1) Be a member in good standing of the Porch. If you have a real interest in traditional knives and you don't seem like a jerk, you're in.
AFAIK, I'm still infraction-free, and thus a member in good standing.
IMHO, I've definitely developed a real interest in traditional knives.
OK, I try to not seem like a jerk, but I'm not always sure how successful I am.

2) Post in this thread. Bonus points will be awarded for good stories or pictures. [SUP] [SUP][SUP][SUP]All posts will be deemed an entry. If you post "not an entry", I may send you something out of spite.[/SUP][/SUP][/SUP][/SUP]
I'll post a picture below.

3) Use it or lose it. If you win you have to give it a real shot for 10 days. Sharpen it up and carry it everywhere. If you still don't like it, give it away.
I think I can work this in as a supplement to my weekly rotation schedule, should I have the good fortune to win.

4) Live on planet earth. This one's open to all, even you people in forn' parts!
My current legal residence IS Planet Earth, so I'm good.

If you don't know what to say, you can talk about a knife that was surprisingly good OR talk about your favorite memory involving a traditional knife. ...

OK, I think I'm eligible, so I'm in!!
Here's a picture of a Rough Rider amber jigged bone canoe that was part of a set of 12 RR knives, each a different pattern but all the same cover material, that I bought soon after I became re-interested in traditional folders about 2.5 years ago. My intent was to carry and use each knife for a week (as you advise for the winner of your GAW) to see which ones I liked and which ones I loathed. But this canoe (and a sowbelly stockman pattern also in the set) had to be forcibly evicted from my pocket after its week had turned into 2 or 3 weeks!

I'd never handled a canoe pattern before, and hadn't expected this visceral attraction! I'm still not exactly sure why the pattern resonates with me, but the knife has a lot of features I enjoy. The symmetry of the frame, the "double copperheadedness" that results in sunk joints, the spearpoint blade's spine curving gently between the bolsters, the blades at opposite ends, small and large spearpoint blades (my favorite shape, although on any other knife I seek more variety, preferably a straight edge blade and a bellied blade), the good feel/grip whichever blade is in use. To paraphrase an old Kinks song: "Canoe, you've really got me now, you've got me so I don't know what I'm doin'" This RR canoe has somehow inspired me to the point that I think I currently have about 35 canoes in my fleet!

Thanks again for your generous GAW, Dr. M!:cool:
Best wishes to all the entrants! :D

Can't post a pic yet but I'm in! My favorite folding traditional knife right now is a toss up- either my Queen #49f or an older Imperial Barlow I recently got from R Redden. The first because of it's utility (punch and a hoof pick that works well to scratch my back😁) and the Barlow because it was a gift of sorts( I told RR he didn't have to send me anything did he not want to). I'm down to carrying both so...there ya go!
Thanks, Neal

Dr-Mabuse, that R16 has captivated me. I keep seeing it and imagining what a wonderful knife it would be to carry. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

As my entry, I'd like to share lessons that two knives have taught me and that have led to my conclusion that I'd very much enjoy carrying the R16 you are generously offering.

First, my Schrade 34OT:

It was my first stockman and my second non-SAK traditional slipjoint. It has taught me many lessons, but the two that are important for this GAW are that small knives can do big things. I was at first unsure about it's 3 1/4" size. Don't I need something bigger, I thought? Nope. That size has turned out to be perfect. Second, knives that are no longer in production still have a lot to offer and deserve to be sought out.

Second, my A Wright Lambsfoot:

This knife taught me how amazingly versatile a single straight edged blade can be. Before I started carrying it on a regular basis, I couldn't imagine how I'd get by without a clip blade. It turns out I don't miss one when I'm carrying the lambsfoot.

I see the R16 as a combining the 34OT's small size, light weight, and availability of a pen secondary (I've modified the spey) with the workhorse straight edge blade of the lambsfoot, or sheepsfoot in the R16's case. That's a compelling combination and I can see why you like it so much.

Thank you again for the GAW. Good luck to all who enter.

I am in, thanks!
When I started into traditional knives, I avoided the congress pattern because I was being judgmental about its shape and blades. My family and I went on vacation to Arkansas and I picked this up at a antique shop:

It is a 1990 North Carolina club knife, a congress by Boker. It has 1095 blades and I love everything about it! Fast forward just a few short years and now I have 15 congress knives in my collection, second only to pens. Oddly enough as I take inventory I only have one half-congress, a vintage no name...
So, don't judge a knife and it may surprise you!!!!

This is a great idea!

I could talk about pocketknives and how I find myself carrying an alox SAK Pioneer "and..." - rotate out another folder, but always have that SAK.

Veering to a related topic instead, I recently had a custom kitchen utility/petty knife made for me. The features I wanted have been running through my head for about five years, and finally crystallized enough to pull the trigger this year. There's something amazing about meeting with a craftsman, rambling on about the ideas in your head, holding a few things and giving feedback, and then watching him grab a blank sheet of paper, start tracing part of this knife and part of that knife, connecting some dots freehand, and bringing your idea to life. Truly unique, and everything I wanted it to be.

Very sweet indeed. And extremely generous. That is a design that I've never tried.

I've been fortunate to be able to spend a few days in Park City this week with my wife and youngest kid. Absolutely gorgeous. I've been hiking around with these fine "nuts" in my pocket. A Frost Peanut, and the little stag Beagle that I cannot get enough of.

Add: Doh! I really should add a pic from the condo balcony while I'm here.

Just finished up taking the JK Handmade knives Workshop, where I made my own traditional fixed blade knife! The very best part of the 2 day workshop was being able to bond with my brother and his son who also took the workshop and made their own traditional fixed blade knives (both of which were better than mine!)
I am willing to give my old Schrade Copenhagen 2 blade a rest should I be lucky enough to win your Remington!
Good luck to all!

Not an entry, I just wanted to say I think it's a great thing you do, the half congress is one of my top 10 favorite traditional patterns, it's just enough knife for the white color worker but not averse to wild weekends. ;) I think I started collectin' traditional knives before I knew I was collectin', I was always findin' reasons why I needed another one, just because it came wrapped in different scales, stag, jigged bone, exotic woods was usually reason enough to buy another knife.

Yeah I knew I had a problem...

What's a man to do but throw himself into full force or be consumed by the constant want for another fix, the next pattern, the impossible to find old patterns or specialize by pickin' one thing to base the collection on perhaps scale material?

Even this forum offers options, like collecting the Traditional Forum"s annual knife, there's only 10, soon to be 11 knives in the series, Good luck finding the 2011 GEC Swell End EO Jack with the bottle opener or the first one the Canal Street Cutlery ring opener.

When Mike and Kevin first started BFC in '98 it was one of the only places on the internet to come together with like minded people to discuss all things knives. I've been here since the beginning and over the years have made many friends here at BFC and especially on the Traditional forum, I've been welcomed by many of you and have had many lengthy conversations both on line and the ones I've been lucky to meet, in person.

So in closing I'd like to tell you it gets better..... But I'd be lyin', it never does, good luck everyone and this is not an entry just an opportunity to share my love of knives with the friends I've made over the years. Hope you enjoyed the post and the pics

Lookin' forward to seein' you around more Dr-Mabuse.

Wow, just catching up on this post after neglecting it for a few days and we have some really fine entries. I'm supposed to be working, so I can't comment on all the fantastic pics and responses right now. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that's tossed their hat in the ring thus far and bump this thread up cause tomorrow I'm announcing the winner!

Alright, things have not gone as planned! I know I've been MIA for awhile but today's the first day in awhile I've been able to sit down and type something other than emails for work. I apologize to all the entrants. We've had some great entries and I've really enjoyed the photos, stories and replies but the time has come to choose a winner. I used a random number generator and it gave me #11! Supratentorial's jawdropping half congress was certainly a worthy entry but it was also not an entry, so he does not win the R16. Close examination of the fine print requires that I send him something anyways. I'm sure I can find something to give him. Anyhow, I went back to the number generator and pulled up number #31! Ernie1980 with his extremely nice looking Boker Congress is the Winner of the R16!! Again, thanks to everyone who participated. It's been a blast and I'm already looking forward to my next GAW. Ernie and Supra, check your inboxes because I need shipping details.
