I have been in South Dakota since Sunday, and have gone out twice for hunting prairie dogs. These are not marathon sessions, because I am here to visit my parents, and have my ten-year-old daughter with me.

Anyway, my first Prairie Dog Safari session was on Monday, and it was more of a warm-up session than anything else, to become re-acquainted with my rifle (a Cooper Arms M21 Phoenix chambered in .204 Ruger). Of the 34 rounds I fired, I had 17 hits. That's a 50% hit ratio. Today's session was 25 rounds, and I had 20 hits. That's a better 80% hit ratio. Here is today's tally counter:

Monday's tally counter photo was for CRK fans, given that the featured knife is an Umfaan:

Your definately getting warmed up. I've got a friend that's into Coopers they are very nice and very accurate.

Wish I was out dogging right now. My dad is over in Montana on a two week trip.

I have never shot a prarie dog. Just rock chucks. One trip I took to go doggin, a cold snap and hard freeze put them all back in their holes the entire time.

Woo hoo! I wanted to take a few shots at them rascals when we were there a couple weeks ago... BUT...... on the Wildlife Loop thru Custer, I think it may be frowned on! ha ha

Good shootin'!

Oh man i wish i was there eradicating prairie dogs!!!! I have more fun shooting them and helping out local ranchers with there problems than any other hunting anymore, but they are getting hard to find around here. I have been killing steel plates LOL, Great shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So when I took my youngest daughter (she was 19) on her first prairie dog shoot, after her first kill I walked her up to it, trying to see how she would react. I said how do you feel about killing something? She said "no problem, actually Dad, it's kind of cool." So there you go.

Taking into consideration of the small bore bullet hitting an obstruction such as a branch or weed or something, 50% - 80% kill ratio should be good. My Grandfather in-law shot ground hogs at 200 - 500 yards with a 22-250 and and any little thing that was in the trajectory of the high velocity .22 would ruin the kill.

Ken, add me to the votes of seeing them doggies!

I guess it is curiosity since we don't have them up here in new England!

I went out again this afternoon, and my friend from Florida joined me. I got 29 more today, raising my total to 66. My friend whacked 33.
