The Tenacious is dead

I may have spoken prematurely on the verdict of the Tenacious.

After calming down a bit, and sitting down with it, along with some 3-in-1 oil, and some ultra-fine grit wet-dry sandpaper, I believe I've managed to smooth things up to the point where it's serviceable again. I managed to buff up the washers without eroding them away.

The end result isn't quite as smooth as it was two days ago before the mishap. But it's smooth enough that the ghetto wave modification works when I pull it out of my pocket, and closes back up easy enough.

Betcha a fat lunch it'll work back to being smooth with some normal use, based on your revised look.

A. Spyderco has a toll free number.
B. Spyderco has great customer service.
C. The knife is already disassembled and could be as good as new with a couple of washers.

I'm pretty sure I know what I would try.

Bingo.

Spyderco doesn't necessarily void the warranty of a knife that's been disassembled...they reserve the right to though if damage is caused during disassembly or if the knife has been modified, at least that's what I've gathered having read numerous threads of this type. I'm sure they'd at the very least sell you new washers if that's the problem. With a toll free number, it certainly could do no harm explaining your situation, especially if the washers are the only part affected by the bleach.

...and here I thought you were just rolling over on it as an excuse to buy a new one...shame on me. ;)

a)Well, that sucks...but don't just write it off as DOA. Even though you may have to pay to have it fixed, I'm sure it can be fixed, it's not like your blade snapped in half or something like that (Spyderco doesn't reblade). Give them a call and see what they say.

b)You could just buy a new knife if it can't be fixed.

c)You could buy a new knife anyway...yes, I am an enabler I know...

I lost a washer on my military a few weeks ago. Thought my wife vacuumed it up. Called Spyderco and they were happy to send out not just one washer but 2. Since I had them on the phone I mentioned one of my Military screws was stripped and one of my Endura screws was stripped as well. The guy asked "so you like to take your knives apart?" I said yes and he said no problem. Sent out the washers, screws, and even threw in a military clip that I didn't ask for. No charge. I don't know why people always act like Spyderco is quick to void warrantees.

Spyderco is a stand up company. Their rules are there for morons and people with think they are entitled to the world cause of the word "warranty". Spyderco's amazing customer service is one of the big reasons I buy so many of their products.

I think the warranty void is more so to protect spyderco from the person who takes the knife apart and sends them
A bad of goodies to put back together "under warranty"

Or who want a spare clip, spare washers, and full set of clip screws for every knife of their collection "Just because".

I'll wear all black in mourning for the fallen Tenacious.....seriously, though, try calling and see if you can get new washers.

Polish them up with a strop until you no longer see any corrosion. Your tenacious will be smoother than ever!

Dont worry man, its a simple fix with new washers. Spyderco does send spare parts, I asker for tenacious washers since I was doing some TLC on mine and spyderco happily sent me some for no charge. If that somehow doesnt work theres other sources of washers as others in this thread have mentioned.

Even though in his current state he may be in pain, and he may be a burden on society, we need to remember that he is still a knife, and we must do our utmost to give him palliative care. If he must go, let him die with dignity knowing that his owners did their best to save him.

Just slap some flitz on a piece of paper and rub the washers on it, they will be nice and polished afterwards.

You are definately making a mountain out of a molehill...
