Am I the only one who thinks this term is ridiculous? In terms of lols this puts "tactical" to shame. ALL KNIVES should be user knives. if not, you've just defeated the purpose of having a knife.

Nonsense. You are trying to invalidate the MANY collectors that buy knives and don't use them. This thread is not going to go the direction you want.

Because we all know there's only one reason why people buy and own knives. Yep, no collectors or accumulators around here...

Whatever.

There's a reason I have a $100 CS Recon Scout in my dresser drawer. It's not because I really need it to baton wood or because I need a big stout fixed blade. It's because I like owning a big badass Bowie knife. I hardly ever use it for anything, but there ain't nothing wrong with that.

"User" is just another way of saying "a sorta beat up knife that I'm not afraid of beating up a little more". But because you can say it using only 4 letters, its a matter of efficiency. :)

I use the term to identify knives that I am selling or trading. Maybe I'm mistaken, but there seem to be a lot of folks round here that like their knives nib

Ever heard of art knives?

Some people make and collect knives that "COULD" be used but are are really a display of the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the maker. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Some knives are built with no frills and obviously meant for "hard use" others are made more for display and admiration. I think one would have to be pretty narrow minded not to understand that.

A far more overused term is "EDC Knife", I'll stick with user knife as it doesn't ring as burned out as the other terminology.

If we only bought a new knife when we genuinely needed one to use, the knife industry would be bankrupt in a week. ;)

True, true. It surprises me that some folks that are strictly users seemingly express irritation with collectors. I can't think of an instance where the demand created by collectors is bad for the knife industry.

Pretty much.

Last time I looked, 'tactical' was still in the dictionary.

ALL KNIVES should be user knives. if not, you've just defeated the purpose of having a knife.

Just the same way that all H-Bombs should be 'user' H-Bombs, otherwise why have them?

Sorry, that straw man just went up in flames.

I'd even go a step further and point out that many user-grade knives have strong collector interest, and many people buy 'ordinary' knives for the sake of appreciating the aesthetics and engineering.

Sure I could start a rotation, carry every knife I own for a week, and after a few years work though the entire Accumulation and turn every one of those into a "User". But what will I have gained?

I just don't think people should or need to feed into threads like this.

I don't collect knives, but I could care less if my neighbor does and everyone should feel the same. You don't need to justify what you do with your money. Every knife collector I know personally also uses knives, so who cares.

The industry would be dead without collectors, I personally thank them.

Go drop a couple of grand on a knife and then tell me you're going to use it to dig weeds out of your gravel driveway. What's that? You wouldn't spend $2K on a knife? Well, then, you have no business telling the people who have what to do with them.

I have a drawer full of knives. I couldn't possibly use them all, are you crazy.

I'd cry if one of my $20 Old Timers got a scratch. Or one of the gift box Opinels... :D

I cry a little inside the first time a knife I've bought specifically to be a user gets its first ding. It's like buying a new car - you know it's going to happen, but it still hurts.

Well, I can't afford to collect cars and keep them in mint condition. But Old Timers and Opinels, why not? :D

And since this is what you think, everyone else must fall in line? I don't think so. I can think of two examples of my own where the term 'user' is appropriate.

1) I have a sprint run Spyderco Manix2 CF/S90V that has some collector appeal, however I carry and use it frequently. Should I decide to sell it would have to be described as a 'user' since it is no longer in pristine collectable condition.
2) I carried a Benchmade 806D2 as my EDC for at least five years, and it shows it. It has been one of my favorite knives of all time and I would hate to lose it. When I discovered they were no longer being made I searched for and bought a spare that happened to be NIB. So I have two 806D2's: one I would describe as my 'user' and one I would refer to as my spare.
