The term "user knife".....

Some people fall in love with a particular design, and buy two. One to use, one to collect. Hence: user knife.

Seems pretty simple to me. People do the same thing with shoes, watches, pens, flashlights, you name it.

Am I the only one who thinks this term is ridiculous? In terms of lols this puts "tactical" to shame. ALL KNIVES should be user knives. if not, you've just defeated the purpose of having a knife.

You haven't been to any fountain pen sites, have you? There are people who buy certain fountain pens intending to NEVER use them, keep them pristine, whether it's because they're uninked vintage pens or expensive limited editions. They buy 'em and either put 'em in a case for safe keeping or in a display case to admire. But never to be inked.

Yup pretty sure you're the only one...

:D

Everytime I see that .gif I cannot help but LMAO!

I'm in the same situation, I have a couple knives that I would not use until the exisiting ones wear out. As Yablanowitz has coined the phrase, "I don't believe in safe queens, only in preneed replacements".

I like collecting stuff. A friend of mine has a coin collection, I don’t think he’s going to pay the groceries with his rare and collectible coins. It's te same for me.

I have a few fountain pens that have never been used.

I have more folders than I need, but I'm not going to stop buying folders!

I sometimes hear the term "user knife" or "work knife" used to justify less-than perfect quality. I got several Sodbusters; none of them are perfectly symmetrical and some have uneven grind. The reasoning is that since you're gonna beat the crap out of them anyway, they don't need to be immaculate.

I just used my NIB Nemesis 4 last night to cut steak.

i'll do what ever i damn well please with MY knives.

I don't understand the collector mentality. I haven't ever collected anything with any greater purpose in mind, but I don't mind the folks who do either. It's their money.

At least they are collecting something that could be used in a pinch. Imagine going off the road and into the water and your seat belt is jammed. The case in the passenger seat has hit the dashboard and sprays its contents all over the cushion.

Would you rather see unused knives spilling out within your reach or sheets of baseball cards?

Of all the knife terms out there, many of which are ridiculous, I feel that "user knife" is one of the more sensible terms.

There's a lot of knives out there that don't get out very often, and occasionally for very good reasons. So what? What is it to you? What business do you have telling us what to do with our knives anyways?

I understand the collector mentality just fine. My wallet doesn't, though :(.

Does anyone else see the irony in this post?

Haa, oh I see the irony in my own post... I knew it was there when I wrote it. I just figured I'd say something since the thread had already erupted (no stopping it). Who knows, maybe it will remind people in the future... these threads spring up daily.

User knives are a fairly rare breed. Many posters on this forum are collectors or rotational users that generally don't get a lot of time with just one knife. Nothing wrong with that but a user knife has come to denote a specific knife in one's collection that gets used for pretty much everything.

This would be a good example of a user knife:Link.

Am I the only one who thinks this term is ridiculous?

probably.

my microtech halo V is not for use at all.. in VA, I can't even carry it legally. The sum of everything all the work I would use it with would not justify the cost, I own it simply because I think it is a piece of art and the culmination of thousands of years of cutlery knowledge, science, technology, and design.
