The Top Ten

... For a classic hymn it would be hard to beat Carrie Underwood's version of How Great Thou Art although a good argument could be made for Amazing Grace. ...
Lots of good music out there. Ten would be hard to pick.
Amazing Grace is my all-time favorite song - I have heard it played with bagpipes, I have played it on a mountain dulcimer, and I have heard many people sing it and I always enjoy it.

Yes, only 10 songs would be very hard to pick.

Representing for Mr Beethoven.

Amazing Grace, geez I can't even listen to a verse without tearing up.

While still at Ft Hood, I was part of an Honor Guard and heard everyone from 90 year old men to 4 year old girls sing that song at funerals. Breaks my heart every time.

Great thread.

While he was a little before my time, there should probably be an Elvis song.

Since I've been loving you by Led Zeppelin would be my first one! It will take a little time to think of others but that def has to be on there! Great question!

My wife says there has to be some CCR in there. Strangely, although three of the six CD's in my car's stack are CCR, (keep in mind you are dealing with an old guy here) I can't bring to mind any one I might put in my top ten list.

The Beethoven piece above could serve double duty for the classical and the hymn.

Something by the Eagles is almost a sure thing. "One of these Nights" is a good candidate, as a bringer back of memories.

Yes, that is the Elvis song I was thinking about.

Here is another gigantic song that is one of my favorites (the Bing Crosby version) (the following was copied from Wikipedia): "White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. According to the Guinness World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 100 million copies worldwide. Other versions of the song, along with Bing Crosby's, have sold over 150 million copies.

Here's another golden oldie. I posted this sequence in a Wine & Cheese music thread a couple of years ago.

Here are two more enduring classics:
- "The Sound of Music" – title song of the play and movie
- "Over the Rainbow" (also referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") – this is the song Judy Garland sang in Wizard of Oz. Here is some info copied from Wikipedia: The song is number one on the "Songs of the Century" list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The American Film Institute also ranked "Over the Rainbow" the greatest movie song of all time on the list of "AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs."
