this thread is a purely hypothetical set up.

you are in your car on your way to a movie...RIGHT now...and the heaven's open up and the wrath is unleashed. it is natures worst ever...a 10000 year storm!!! the guy on the radio says its like that movie with dennis quaid!!!

you are el-stucko. in the middle of the highway and 5 miles from any structures and shops.

all you have is what is in your car right now. (and i mean right now...this will tell us how many of you are truly prepared or just think you are.( i am the i think i am guy).)

its raining hurricane style and 15 degrees outside.... you have your better half and any dependents with you...pets or kids or both even.

WHAT DO YOU DO..

do you seek shelter...?
where do you seek it?
what helpful items do you have on you right NOW. ( i cant stress this enough!)
are you going to be able to get assistance or are you on your own...?

tell us how you will prioritize and react.

Seak highground with the car(Jeep Liberty), The car will make a good shelter. I always have my rain gear(cheap poncho, rain pants, and Jacket) in the back, as well as an empty nalgene bottle. Also a vehicle emergency kit, including 2 road flares, First aid kit, etc.I also keep my Ontario RAT 5 in the back. I would use my poncho for water collection, and try to wait it out.

I'm in luck since you say what I have on me right now. Since the CT Gathering is tomorrow I brought my dayhike kit to work with me so I can organize it. :D Which has a better poncho, psk, fishing kit, AMK first aid kit, 100' paracord, flashlight, water purification tabs, compass, Vic Farmer, etc.
I think with this gear I would be ok for a few days if need be.

I am a lucky one I have my Ham Radio in the car and usually a hand held ham radio as well. I am going to head for higher ground . With me I have rain gear, 2 lighters, cell phone(which I would not rely on) a leather man, 2 flash lights, My Compainon knife and my CUDA EDC, and I have a 22 pistol in my back pocket. I could make it for awhile out there. Doug

Im with tony. Seek high ground, and use vehicle for shelter. I have a radio in my car, so if the repeater is still up, I can radio out, and scan the weather channels, as well as the emergency channels.

I have a fully stocked jump bag in my ride, as well as some blades, and a few blankets, and my Sig if things get rocky post storm. Food is what I am lacking in my truck. I have acouple cliff bars, and a jug of water, but that wont last long with the whole family.

Might have to kick out the wife and kids.

J/K on that last part;)

Start swimming. Here if it rain that much it also floods. Maybe just hit the mountains sit under tree with a good book and wait for it to pass..

Try to drive to the lee side of something sturdy & on high ground, & park there.

I wouldn't want to leave the car in those conditions. Wait, it's raining AND 15 degrees?? Anyway, try to wait it out. Last winter we had a guy who famously left his family in the car to seek help, he died they lived.

On me (if in the car) I have right now 2L water, leatherman, 2 flashlights + GloTube, mylar emergency jacket, pocket knife & CS cheapie tanto. This makes me realize I need more food bars & water, & maybe a couple surplus blankets.

I have so much crap stashed in my truck I'd gain 3 mpg if I took it all out. Fully stocked cordura tool bag filled with the whole enchilada of survival gear. Two gas cans, water, blanket, jacket, gloves, road flares, first aid kit, CB radio, food, fire log.

I'd find a good place to park and stay put. Somewhere where the truck would be sheltered from wind would be nice.

I'd rig up a water collection system off the hood. Once in a while I'd run the engine and melt the ice off the truck.

15 degrees? In Florida? Unless you're talking Celsius, I'm F-ed, even with my kit. I don't ride around with anything that can handle that, no matter what else is going on..

I'd rethink the sitting under tree idea, in hurricane force winds, but if you do can I have your knives;):D

Gravy man. I live in the Hill Country. When it rains hard out here the lowlands friggin flood. I have 1999 Silverado Z-71 so I'm heading up to higher ground ASAP. I fill up when I reach a little less than half a tank so there is a good chance I have a nearly full tank.

I keep my CamelBak MULE with a few days worth of food and a FAK inside. Got the Buck 110, Leatherman Surge, SAK Tinker, cell phone and River Rock flashlight EDC. I keep 2gal of water in the truck as well as an Eddie Bauer rainsuit and a fairly heavy jacket. I just tossed my 20ga shotgun in today with about 25 shells. So I think I am pretty well set.

I have no dependents of any kind except my truck, so I'll play along and say that I have a female friend along for the movie trip. We're both going to higher ground. Staying in the truck for shelter and listening to the radio to see when and where we can drive.

My toyota is locked up front and rear on 35s, I dont tink I would stop heading to the movies, I would just lock my hubs and click on my e-lockers:D

By the way, I live in WA, its like that every day here:eek:

:D Great minds think alike...my wife is always asking to clean out my trunk,it is not junky but full of gear ... but out of site....or well hiding....

il bruche has the right idea here...but what would we do? are we totally confident in our abilities?

are we? i just thought it was rainy and humid up here.........and no this was started from another thread in the WSS section...someone said that Brian's what if threads were great and needed to come back..this is my poor attempt.

Thats funny. Thats about what I was thinking. If it was 15 degrees it would be snowing. Probably I would lock the hubs on my van and swing by the store because I hate paying theatre prices for candy. If it was just raining I dont think I would even lock the hubs. If I was headed to a theatre in another town I would probably turn back to home because my town can get cut off. If my family had to stay in the van we would be fine for long while.

If the storm was real bad and the snow heavy, I don't know how well driving will be. Not that my Jeep can't handle it, but visibilty in a blowing snow is pretty much inexistant.

i have the ginormously equipped BOB in my trunk i talked about the other day so that would help.

a car can make a great shelter.wind proof, water proof and it is chuck full of useful items if you decided to strip it.
