The (un)Official SDFK Thread

Will both the SS and basic SDFK have a distal taper towards the tip being 1/4 inch thick at ricasso? If yes, does the taper runs for the entire length of the blade or starts somewhere in the middle of the blade?

Ok someone tell me why I don't need this and why I should be fine with my HDFK and basic field knife 😬
It’s going to be a heavy clunky thing. The FK2 and HDFK are much more refined. Honestly I’m concerned that Nathan might get stuck with these in his inventory for a long time. I doubt there will be much interest. I’ll probably pick one up just so he feels encouraged enough to try new things.

Those ABS guys and their silly Bowie knives. It's just the gift that keeps on giving.

I could go on another rant (and I will later) but I have my hands full this morning.

I'm all ears. Rant away. My (limited) understanding of distal tapers is that it was for weight management to promote optimal blade dynamics per the intended end use.

My scientific brain cares for the end result, and not the means. Function drives design.

As much as I enjoy the style and look of Bowies, and in fact am finishing one now, with more in the works, I would have conceded to the criticisms you make about practical use.
Thus, I was interested to read Joe Paranee's post about the cutting performance of Bowies (and he specifically mentions your favorite features like distal taper). He cut a bunch of mats and talks about snap cuts, back cuts, and slicing. In the end he says that a large tanto is better overall, but finds pretty good cutting performance in the Bowie.
