The unappreciated box cutter (boxcutter)

I've carried one of these carton cutters unobtrusively in my shirt pocket for years. Replaceable bladed, one-handed opening, sheeple-friendly, it gets used almost every day. Love it. Don't know I have it on me till I need it, and then it's there, flat and invisible in my pocket. Wish I could buy one of stainless steel, high quality, rather than the throw-away quality of the one I have, which has nonetheless been in my pocket for 4 years (original cost $0.50).

I suppose a better quality alternative that weighs almost the same (1.5oz vs 1oz) and is also flat in the pocket is the Buck Metro available at REI for about $12. The Buck has a stainless, locking blade, although it is NOT replaceable, so I'd have to treat it with a little respect.

edit: made from poor quality steel, and there are bad reports about this item on this forum

The Metro is also sold at K-Merde. REI and Wally also sell the tiny CRKT knives like the Peck and the Snap Lock 2.

I love disposable-blade knives, however.

I have a super knife boxcutter I use for cutting stuff that isnt worthy of my EDC knives.Like cutting linoleum, drywall and copper wires.

Working on a nite crew in a grocery store for the last 29 years, a Garvey boxcutter has become an extension of my hand.:D

I want a new Kwikblade® ™ (my neologism) to replace the carton cutter, which has the unfortunate habit of bending out of shape since it is constructed of soft aluminium. I shall go to MallWart to check out the knives you mentioned. Thanks. Essentially, I want a one-hand-operated item that can extrude a blade, yet weighs less than 40g (1.3oz) and is as flat as possible. The only other likely contender is the Christy Knife (aka Sliding Blade Pocket Knife, $20-$25, which is overpriced due to US manufacture).

what about small spydercos; cricket, dragonfly, spin, jester

you just sharpen instead of replacing the blade

Ok, back from Mall*Wart.

I asked to see the P.E.C.K. by CRKT ... they don't have it. Here's the Peck ($26.95 at AG Russell) :

What they DID have, and I bought ($15), is the Ridge by Gerber (Teflon Coated, 1.4oz), which looks almost identical to me:

1) I want to remove the "money clip" from the back to make it lighter and thinner

2) It is made from "high carbon stainless steel" -- is that code for low quality stainless steel? I'd like to have seen them mention 440 or 420 or AUS-6 or 8.

I have one of those gerbers and they are ok little knives but i would not trust the lock on them at all simply because it's plastic

This is outrageous. We need to change advertizing and perhaps discourage boxcutters less than $50 - no cheap steel. I say we should encourage makers to stop with the el cheapo knives, the Wal*Mart knives, the $20 eBay knives, the $0.50 throwaway knives because the teenage set are getting into this, and when they start carrying knives en masse and slicing each other up with them, get ready for legislation.

LOL! Yes, quite. Hoist by my own petard. In mitigation, let me state I'd happily have bought a higher quality version of the original carton cutter you see at the top of the page here, but when in Rome ....

Hhhmmmm mine must be a different model although it looks exactly the same:confused:

The one I have is different to the illustrated knife here in this respect: the "money clip" on the back is slightly different. I suspect some modifications have been made to this knife's design, and that may include a better lock. IMO, there is no plastic on this knife. You may have an older version. Pop into Walmart and check.
