The unappreciated box cutter (boxcutter)

The OLFA above costs around $2.
The replacement blades cost about $3 for a 5-pack

Well, OLFA is a great Japanese product, so I took the plunge and bought 2 of their Carton Cutters and a box of 30 replacement blades (180 individual snap-off edges). I reckon that will see me through the next 20 years. :)

Bought it from http://www.olfablades.com
UPS ground shipping was $7.11, which is way too high IMO.

I've used very similar before. It was quite handy. The blade was spring loaded to auto-retract when you let go of the thing. It could also be "locked" onto open position. I threw it away when the blade dulled, and haven't seen one quite like it since. Just some really crappy knock offs.

Just FYI: the reasons I don't like the Ridge are: Gerber, when contacted, didn't even know the angles used in grinding this knife, thus giving me a bad feeling about the whole dang product. Also, opening the knife with the "money folder" removed is very difficult, since the hand has little to hold on to. Lastly, with the lock exposed you have to be extremely careful not to disengage the liner lock while cutting something. Self-inflicted injury is a possible problem, and I even read a post here by someone who had to have microsurgery on his finger when a similarly-designed KISS knife cut him.

I've seen some of those skeletonized knives around, and they seemed poorly thought out. Too easy to unlock in use, blade too exposed when closed.

They do look cool, though. ;)

Yep, Shecky, that circular knife is a throw-away which is why I passed it up.

The long, flat carton knife is, however, something many people here may want to consider. Why is it better than any common-or-garden cutter? Well, its extremely flat profile and one-hand opening makes it one of the easiest knives on earth to have with you. Always razor sharp, no sharpening necessary. Super cheap. Cuts blister packs easily. Opens any sort of plastic packaging, letters, cartons. This is most of what I need a knife for.

i used to carry a Ridge on my car keys (was at Wally World on clearance for like $10) but i kept grabbing my keys to find a half-open knife... never really liked the action or the lock on it either though

replaced it with a Spyderco Ladybug, but it's a bit small, haven't really used it yet

the Edgie is kinda intriguing, but my EDCs are fairly cheap, and i usually just use those for boxes, etc...

I entirely miss your point, if indeed you have any.

If you are objecting to me linking to their graphic, I'm sure they'd be happy for the link. The business it'll bring will be most welcome.

No objection whatsoever. Merely a small attempt at humor (the smiley helps the humor-challenged to understand what it was that just passed them by).

This is the snap off Olfa that I use at work, about all day, every day.
We call them Mat or Matte Knives.
We cut Foamcore, Illustration, Carolina & Matte boards as well as paper.
A box of replacement blades lasts about a week for the 4 of us.
Great knives, as soon as they drag a little it is time for a new tip.
They work really well on leather too.
Olfa even makes "Tactical" black blades. I can't see any difference in edge holding but they cost more and look cool :D

They also make a model that has 5 or 6 extra blades in the handle. Couldn't find that on the website though. Very handy for working on site, when you don't have the box of spares with you..
