The Urban B.O.B

I have a suppressor on my PCP air rifle for the quiet hunting reason. Even though the rifle's not exactly loud, it's still a very noticeable sound that carries a fair distance on the hills. The suppressor makes it pretty much inaudible to anyone not so close that I wouldn't be shooting anyway.

Of course, it doesn't fit in my BOB (or rather GHB in my case), urban or otherwise. If carrying a firearm with a possibility of using it for hunting then I think the suppressor makes perfect sense.

the problem here is that "you imagine" not "you've done".

consider for a moment that if you get caught with that little item, it's gonna be ten years, and $10,000 not counting legal costs. and when you're found guilty, you'll be a convicted felon and not able to legally own guns any more.

a lotta risk for the chance that it may come in handy in the event you need it. the last MAJOR events that i can think of in Kali would be SF on '06, Kern in '52, San Fernando in '71, Loma Prieta in '89 and Northridge in '94

so that's somewhere between 5 and 46 years between major events. probably not good enough odds to warrant the risk of having it in a BOB.

if you're got something that your state doesn't allow. keep it stashed securely. better yet, just move someplace where you can legally have the goodies that you can't have in Kali!

now then, if you lived someplace where a suppressor was legal, i still wouldn't sugest it for BOB use. they're long and get hot quickly. kinda hard to have one on a gun in an IWB holster, would be VERY slow to draw from concealment.

on a long gun or SBR, no problem. if you can afford it and do it legally, no argument against them for defending the home.

and if you're on the move and things are sketchy... other people may be shooting without them. people in general tend to move AWAY from gunfire, or at least not move towards it. so if you're moving from wherever you are when things happen to wherever you're going... i'm not gonna be to concerned about a litle noise.

completely different scenario if you're hunting or something. probably not a good idea to me making noise then.

It's legal in Oregon. Hehe.;)

Factory hi-caps for the 92FS/M9 are 20 rd - not sure where you might find 32 rounders or who might make them (quality issues???)...

blake

yup, i was thinking the same thing... but then i haven't gone hunting for 32s for a Beretta/M9... there are probably some, but those are most likely junk.

i like QUALITY mags. which usually means FACTORY, or Mec-Gar (and they make a lot of the factory mags)

yep, the class 3 stuff i.e. "short, fast pr quiet"_ is legal in a number of states... but Kali ain't one of 'em.

and i don't think the rewards are worth the risks in a state where it ain't legal.

I personally would have to see how big it is. Then it depends on the time of year, the environment, etc. I might carry it in a hip holster. But I resent the term "toughs". Tough has nothing to do with it. It is a practical attachment to a firearm that enhances it's utility. "Toughs" sounds like a term a "progressive" would use.

But MY primary interest in a suppressor is for use at home, in the house. Not on the street. I don't entirely buy the whole auditory exclusion, although I have experienced a mild form of it with "buck fever." but that was outside, with a long arm. Inside? In a house? I don't know about that. And what about my family? It will be bad enough even with the suppressor. I'd hate to think about without it.

I don't want to start a pissing match or anything, I live in Oregon were they are good to go. I would like to have one, but don't want to pony up the cash right now for one. I'm just asking on how people plan to use the high end attachments and what there tough process is behind how they will deploy them for a GHB and BOBs, that's all.

Well here for me its earthquake that i realy worry about. I live in the City of LA but my parents are about 30miles out of the center of the city. Still alot of people but not as much. The way i handle it is i set up water barrels and enough food for everyone in the family that would show up. I want to add another 55gallon barrel in there as well just in case. I already have some plans for a toilet but need to work on other ideas. I got all my extra ammo over there as well. If i realy need to get out my idea is to get to my parents and bug in. I carry water, bars, extra water and two 2liter water bladders in case i find extra water on the way, Gatoraid powder. extra cloths depands on the weather so i change what ever i got in there during the year. I also plan to leave the house on my bicycle and hang things off it so i can ride or carry everything extra and use it like in many Asian countries. But if i do need to run all the basics are in my pack. My pack is the old german army ranger pack. The reason i use it is cause that thing seems to last forever even compare to some realy high priced packs. I like the idea of one big comparment as i can put more things into it while moving. Like cloths or blankets or cans of food. Also a hand gun with about 50 extra round for it. I got no intention of getting into a fire fight but run as fast and as far as i can to get away from one. Got no visions of being some Rambo. At my parents i also got 7 15gallon barrels the reason for that is if the gov dicide to let people get water from a water truck i need to get there fast and carry as much as i can. so instad of running around with 5gallon cans i can put the 15 gallon on a dolly and fill it up. something i cant do with a 55 gallon barrel. got way to collect water if its raining and a way to filter it as well. Thats all i can think about right now at work lol...

if you or you & yours decide to bug the only viable way is by foot. all the roads will be blocked by people wreaking & running out of gas. motorcycles & bicyeles will be knocked over with people whom did'nt even have a can of beans stored. look at what happened in katrina.--dennis

Another item that I carry is a small Sangean radio. It is AM/FM/TV/NOAA. I and my family have found it extremely useful on our camping trips. Being able to get weather and news info was always useful.

Rog. No offense intended. I just took exception to the term "toughs." Sorry. Cheers?! :) And it was a good question, thought provoking. I did take some time to consider my actual answer. Peace?

Best urban survival kit...don't live in an urban area. Especially in a SHTF scenario.

Many of us are forced to commute to one. in that case it is what you EDC and keep in your trunk is used to GOOD & GBH where your primary stash and loved ones are.

Knowing & memorizing multiple routes out of town is probably the way to go. Next, all the gear in the world won't save you if you don't use your brain and remain calm. A reliable car...keep it well maintained and never go below 1/2 tank. A multitool, map, crow bar, spare tire, water, blanket, rain gear, extra clothes, boots & socks, flashlight, cordage, tarp, lighters, jumper cables, MREs, spare box of ammo for primay carry. I have all this (non-bulky) stuff in a non-tactical REI pack (obviously not the spare.)

Stay in shape... you never know when you will need to egress from your vehicle and rely on your stamina to get you the 20-30 miles home. I wouldn't hesitate to loose all my gear to move faster except water and EDC if it meant getting home more rapidly.

I EDC a folding knife, fire starting gear, BB cell phone and a GLOCK 27 w/ 2 extra mags.

I have however, trusted my life to the M9 pistol in the service and it is a fine combatpistol too; just not the Ideal CC weapon. I don't know about all this silencer talk...just be aware of how loud your carry weapon is with out hearing protection...mine is deafening. This can be an asset or a hinderance dpending on the situation. Best chance is to avoid a situation with gunfire all together...even if it means abandoning your vehicle and moving quietly.

preparedness is a lifestyle choice.

I don't have a lot of urban experience, but I'd have to rank a suppressor very close to the bottom of needed items in a catastrophe.

If a vehicle isn't an option, that means your carrying your bag and that means each and every item should have been carefully considered and only the most necessary items (and the lightest of those) are in said bag. The bag/pack should be comfortable w/ the load you're going to be carrying (that means the proper bag for the job and as important- one that fits properly), because you may possibly be carrying it a long ways.

shelter, water, signaling (the truth is most disasters don't end in armageddon, so you might actually want to be found in the flood, earthquake, fill in the blank), navigation and first aid- the needs are the same as a wilderness scenario, the tools might be slightly different

doesn't seem to get much discussion (certainly not as sexy as 30+ magazines or suppressors), but clothing appropriate for the season/conditions you might face just might save your (or another's) life

When you need it, the bag you have with you is worth more than the one at home in the garage. Training is worth more than tools. The more you train the more you learn to do with less.- George

Never said I owned any of those listed. If there's an available holster that will accommodate the silencer / suppressor on the handgun, shouldn't that person most likely have that as well?

I've seen some of the 32 rd. magazines on YT and at a range, but I heard they sometimes don't feed properly, and as you mentioned, probably not of the best quality.

fixer, I don't own any silencers, but if I did, I'd want to go through the paperwork and not regret having to go through the trouble of all that you listed. Haha.
