The Versatile Trail Hawk

you know ia you are one bad ass dude. i have seen that vid like 4 times now and i am still amazed. plus the t hawk is just cool no matter what you do with it.

This is the type of videos CS should have on their website!

I've got to sharpen my Trail hawk, and replace a handle. I scarred my hickory hadle badly by throwing.

Outstanding video. No baloney, just good solid safe techniques. I definitely agree, the TH is a great value and you showed how ot make the most of it.

I used one of mine just last night to notch out some rails in my deck so I could run an extension cord under them and put up some Xmas lights. One tool, 5 minutes, job done!

In the mean time, inspired by this video I made a handle for my TH as well.

Its not so good - the top is to small, but it was fun to play with.

Great video! Could you tell us what you use to sharpen your hawk with and how you sharpen it initially and in the field?

This will make many sharpening Nazis cringe. To get the initial bevel I use a file. After that I use a DC-4. That's it. I gave it a good bang on the concrete last night. It took a little while to get it sharp again.

Thanks IA. I tend to use a file too or a course stone when I am home on machetes and hatchets but am trying to get better at convexing edges. I wonder if a convex edge may not work as well when using it as a chisel or adze though?

Cold Steel's new Pipe Hawk is looking mighty nice to me as a wilderness tool. Nice hammer head on the end of it.

I was always apprehensive about hawks, but this post pushed me of the fence. Looks like I'll be picking one up come warmer weather. Great post, IA. thanks!

Impressive! I'm going to have to get one now. I've always been a hatchet fan, but this video convinced me the tomahawk is worth a try.

Is there any particular reason the Trail Hawk would be better than the Pipe Hawk or Rifleman's Hawk? (I've only looked at Cold Steel offerings so far)
