The Vest Thread

Several outdoor manufacturers make soft shell vests in plain colours with 2 or 3 normal pockets rather than big cargo patch pockets. They look much more subdued.

Might be OK with hip waders---otherwise they went out of favor about the same time Members Only jackets did.

Just sayin.

You'll draw undue attn to yourself simply because it looks like you fell out of the hot tub time machine from 1985-----gun or not.

I wear a down vest in the winter and spring. It covers whatever hardwear I'm carrying and has enough pockets for other items. The ScottEvest looks promising, both in jacket and vest forms. I await any information on these products from actual users!

For spring and fall in New England a vest is the perfect EDC garment. Carries all my EDC and you can just put it on and take it off. I never worry about the "shoot me first" syndrome. Most people just are not that observant!

I've found a light fleece vest is a great spring and fall layer. I also have a nice heavy fleece and duck canvas carhart vest that I picked up on sale and haven't really worn yet.

Neither one of those have a lot of pockets so they aren't as useful as a fisherman's vest or photog's vest.

I was wearing my Filson cruiser vest yesterday on a hike....

nobody shot me first. just sayin'

That's been my experience too. I wear vests a lot, and some of them have a lot of pockets, and yet I don't seem to be getting shot first much.

When I practice "becoming the enemy" ... If I were to start in shooting people I think I would shoot a policeman in uniform first, even before I would shoot somebody who's wearing a vest. I guess they must get shot first a tremendous amount, huh? As soon as you set foot out the door with a police uniform on you get shot, I bet.

Now that I think on it, I haven't ever been shot wearing a vest either.

(My dog always brags about what a good guard she is because my truck has never, not once, been stolen when she is riding with me)

A lot of security teams wear the 511 vests down hear. When I'm working executive protection and we have to be discreet, I never let my guys wear does vest, they attract to much attention down hear. And every one knows that in you wear one you are probably a bodyguard.

But they do help at keeping you cool and your gun covered. They are just not an option for me. We have to wear light jackets or untucked shirts to cover our gear. Inside the waist band holsters help.

Ahhhh finally, some level-headed perspectives.

When your only solution is a "hammer" (gun), you tend to approach every problem as a nail.

I guess smarmy one-uppery is the new level headed then. They STILL scream "I have a gun" while you peruse big screen tv's at best buy with your EoTac vest.
I don't think any of you are obtuse enough to think that context is meaningless. Shoot me first or last, at least you should know what message you're putting out there.

I don't know about now but in the late 90's they were very in vogue with alphabet soup special agents. They also became popular with the CCW crowd because they were light weight and helped you conceal your weapon. if you're not into loose button-ups they can be handy. But to someone who is situationally aware, they do trip the sensor. Then you look at the person a little more closely and decide friendly, maybe, or watch.

I don't stand a chance in town because everyone knows where I work and assumes I'm armed. Even wearing a t-shirt and cargo shorts someone will tease someone else not to "mess" with me because "I'm packing". I get used to it. But having worked in security at federal facilities you take a second look at the guy with the photog vest and the fanny pack and ... the list goes on.

Let's talk about classic but functional man gear here: the hunting or photo journalist vest. Something that useful never really goes out of style, right?

Something along these lines maybe?

I've got one of these Filsons.
One of the most versatile garments I have.
Warm enough to wear alone in cool weather, and thin enough to layer under any piece of outerwear I own when it's really cold.
Plus, it's built like the proverbial Brick Sh*thouse.
Lenny

I'm with you. That's one of my best pieces of hunting kit. It may not always be the outermost layer, but it's typically in there somewhere. :D

I have a scottevest jacket and like it. It is pretty warm and most pockets are internal. Looks like a fleece jacket and the sleeve zip off.

Talk to a cop about profiling,,, vests, fanny bags and "man purses". Does not mean everyone on the street is thinking that way- but people trained in security do.

I have an Arktis that I like- open back and mesh keep construction it nice and cool. I wear it under a light jacket or on hikes- open back keeps me cool under the pack. Keeps essentials on me even if I take the pack off.

I like those Filsons!! warm torso with great arm movement.

Filson Mackinaw Wool Vest. I wear it in the woods, going to town, going to church ..... anywhere and everywhere from fall through spring. Blue jeans, khakis, dress pants - it works well with anything.
