The Vest Thread

I see this thread is still chugging along and with less "shoot me" alarms going on, obviously because of the season.

I'm with you. That's one of my best pieces of hunting kit. It may not always bee the outermost layer, but it's typically in there somewhere. :D

BTW, that's gotta be one of coolest gear-related pics I've seen for quite a while.

Untamed,
Kamusta po :)

Without offense, I hope, I would point out a difference in American culture and Filipino culture- Simply put- many people own guns here in the US that are not Mil or LEo- or holduppers/terrorists. In Filipino culture it is not the same. Sport hunting and sport shooting are not common in the Phils. Simply getting a permit to posess a firearm requires connections and kodong. This has been difficult for asawa ko to accept but she is coming around :) She now enjoys getting to shoot my small caliber rifle. She is no longer nervous about having them in the house since she understands how they work.

While I was in the Phils, everytime I entered a shopping mall or bank, my daybag was searched and I lifted my shirt so the security staff could see my waistband- the reason they look in these areas is not because everyone with a bag carries a gun. They look because people who DO carry guns, often use these areas to hide them. This is how they are trained.

In the US, not every man wearing a waistbag or vest nor every woman carrying a purse is carrying a gun. BUT officers that suspect a weapon ARE taught that these are likely areas for concealment.

A vest does not automatically scream gun- but it offers one of the "potential" places security personel consider. There are many things they look for before alarms go off.

Regards,
Bill

Good thread. I'm also in the market for a new vest. I spent several years shooting a lot of IDPA and have worn out my @$50 Rothco Vest. It's been sewn once and just ripped again and I think it's too dry rotted to be fixed. Since I don't shoot much IDPA anymore it's primarily a work/woods/range vest. My wife wouldn't be seen in public with me if I wore it out of the house in her presence. I'd like to find something that would allow me to carry some gear (as my pockets are already full) and yet not look like "that guy", even if I am in fact "that guy". I'm open to suggestions. I like the Duluth stuff, but most of it is imported. Does anyone in the US make anything like this?

Thanks,

Untamed,
Salamat po. :0 Sometimes garments that "stand out" in one setting are perfectly acceptable in others. My ACU EDC pack is perrfectly benign in Roanoke. Worn in a major metropolitan- maybe not and I was told NOT to wear camo anything in the Phils. Kano in camo-no go. LOL!

I have my Arktis but is is definitely "tactical" in present guise- M16 mag pockets on front but I like the construction and open mesh weave for heat. So I may look up a seamstress to alfter the front pockets a little. Still thinking hard on a lightweight material vest for using this Summer.
