The Whittling Corner

It's good to see another strong recommendation for the Boker Carver's Congress. I'm definitely going to have to give that one a try. A spey blade isn't my first choice of a curved blade for whittling, but having one along with a pen would be handy.

Thanks for the recommendations of the other Bokers, too. If I recall correctly, they used to make a whittler pattern as well. I wonder if they still do.
I bought this Boker Whittler a few years ago. I think they still make them, though maybe with different covers. This one is part of the Beer Barrel series.

Thanks r8shell r8shell . That’s the one I was remembering. What do you think about it?
It's a carbon steel, Solingen-made Boker, so there's nothing not to like. ;) I'm afraid I haven't used it to whittle yet. I'm fond of whittler patterns for general use pocketknives. Pretty similar assortment of edges as a stockman, but in a more elegant configuration. I'll pull it out of the drawer next time I get a chance to do a little whittling and let you know. I expect it'll work well.

Thanks. That’s about what I thought you mights say. Except for the haven’t whittled with it bit. ;)

Just kidding. ,I’m certainly guilty of a few whittler acquisitions tha are still waiting to be sharpened and tried. I’d usually rather be whittling with I knife I’ve got just right than be sharpening a new one. Sometimes the sharpening bug does hit, though...

And, I’m going to have to get some of that Solingen steel to put in the sharpening queue. ;)

I also do not really whittle with the large blade on my stockman knives. I've been considering sharpening one up, though, to see how I like it for the initial bulk removal stages of some whittling projects.

In a whittling context, I think bulk stock removal is what the main blade is most suited for. I usually get impatient and find a saw or sander for a large part of my bulk stock removal.

What do you think of the saber grind on the Buck. Does it make any difference for whittling for you?

Once the blade is sharpened to the thinner edge profile, that works best for whittling, then the buck 301 works well. I just checked, I took it down to around 10° per side, as opposed to the 20° plus per side it comes from the factory. I may have gotten a little carried away with the angle. I didn't check it at the time. I just set my jig near the low end of it's adjustment and started sharpening. I have only sharpened the spey blade like that. I like the thinner blades that the Boker knives have, but I also thought their edge was to blunt, and needed thinning to make a good whittler.

It took three tries, but this one was a fun one:

I followed the instructions and pattern given in E. J. Tangerman’s Whittling and Woodcarving and used a Camillus 72 for the bulk of the carving. I switched to my modified Case 6383 with its thin, pointy clip blade for the hinge cuts.

The first attempt looked better, right up to when it broke while I was trying to separate the parts. ;)

For a reason unknown to me, I'm not able to see the image in your post, Greg.

At first, me too. I right clicked it and was able to open a new tab that showed it.
Might work for you.
OG

I can't see it either, and I can't seem to right click on my phone.

Uh oh. It's actually a little video that is was hosted through Imgur. It's working fine for me when I browse on iPhone and iPad, but not in my browser on my computer. Let me see if I can find another way to post it...

Edit: 5K Qs 5K Qs yablanowitz yablanowitz I uploaded the video to the BF media gallery and edited my earlier post to use it. Please try again.

Take a look for sure. It's purely amazing, Gracie.

Thanks and congrats, Greg!!! :thumbsup::cool::cool::thumbsup:
I can see the video now, and those pliers are amazing!:)

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen. Much appreciated and I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it.

Well, I don't have permission to view it, but pliers I have done.

I'm surprised that you can't see it. There was a permission issue when I first posted it, but that should have been resolved. o_O

I'm not surprised you've done pliers, though. It seems like something you'd enjoy tackling. :)

Yep, tried reloading, opening in new tab, nothing works. It could be my phone as well.

I grabbed a few of mine and shot a picture.

Nice, Jack! I particularly like your use of the pliers as a knife holder. ;)

I haven't tried that style of joint yet, but rather the one that Tangerman recommends as practice beforehand. The one you use definitely has a cleaner, tighter look. I'll have to tackle it one of these days.

I'm sorry that you, and maybe others, are having trouble seeing my video. That's a bummer. As one last try, here's the Imgur page link. Maybe that'll work for you. In the future I think I'll stick with still photos.
