Old Biker, What is the wood you used for your large serving spoon? I live in Yuma Az. and there is precious little wood usable for carving. Most is too hard for me. Been using some store bought poplar but I don't love it. I want to carve a ladle but can't find suitable wood here for that.

It's birch. I went into Portland, to Crosscut Hardwoods, and bought a board 2 inches thick by 5 inches wide, by about 7 feet long. I figure it will keep me in spoon material for quite a while. But it is dry, so the knife needs to be sharp

Old Biker, thank you sir. I too am an old biker, physically unable to handle my bikes any longer so now I carve and whittle and various other things. I'll see if I can find some birth down here in the great south west.

Thank you, I feel like I am still learning. I definitely am enjoying the process though, very relaxing.

I've been away from the forum for a while and it was such a delight to see that more than a page of posts have been added to this thread since I last checked in. It's nice to see the discussion of sharpening and spoon carving. And, of course, it's great to see new projects being posted and foks' comments about them. :)

Jiki Jiki and @Kiro thanks for sharing your projects. I've enjoyed seeing them. Welcome to the thread! :)

lutejones lutejones it's so good to see you posting here. You've got such a wonderful, distinct style that I can recognize your work without even having to see the name or avatar beside it. They're always so much fun to see. I'm glad you got your courthouse whittler back. :) And, thanks for the excellent tutorial on preparing a blade for whittling.

Here's my most recent whittling project. I'd intended it to be a stylized giraffe, but didn't make the piece of wood tall enough, so it's now a stylized baby giraffe. :D

It was carved mostly with my go-to Camillus 72. A Helvie Donald Mertz Series 8 Queen Bee pitched in at the end for some finishing touches on tight spaces.

My latest project,:D. The wood broke last night and I was not wearing my glove. That's a 6 stitch 4 hour trip to the ER lesson.

Helvie big rough out blade took my knuckle right down to the bone.
