It was a quest to find a good whittling knife that originally led me to the Porch. Not only did I find the information and advice I was seeking, I also found a great community made up friendly, courteous people who are incredibly generous with their time, knowledge, and treasure. It's a good place and I like it here. It seems only fitting that I should do my little part to help engender an interest in whittling among the other members of the Porch.
I know that getting started with whittling can be overwhelming for some. What knife should I use? How do I get it sharp enough? What is sharp enough, anyway? Where do I find wood? What are the basic techniques?
To help with that, I'm hosting my second Whittling Starter Kit GAW with everything you need to sidestep those questions and skip straight to the joy of turning small pieces of wood into even smaller pieces of wood. Up for grabs this year:
- Camillus 72: sharpened and ready to whittle
- Two-sided strop and (not pictured) a chunk of green compound: to keep the blades whittlin' sharp
- Carving glove: because I only want you to be cutting wood
- A copy of Classic Whittling: Basic Techniques & Old-time Projects: a great introduction to basic techniques & sharpening and detailed instructions for a wide selection of projects
- A variety of basswood pieces to get you started
The glove pictured is mine. I'll order a new one of the correct size once the winner has been selected.
Here's a closer view of knife:
The Camillus 72 is my favorite pattern for whittling. At 3 5/8" inches long it fits comfortably in the hand and its slim profile rides well in the pocket, making it also a fine choice for EDC. Its small clip and coping blades are capable and versatile whittlers. I'll sharpen them for whittling and leave the factory edge on the main so that you can set it up to your liking for other uses.
This GAW is open to those who:
- Have an interest in learning to whittle
- Are an active member of the Porch: at least 20 posts in the Traditional forum prior to the start of this thread and with at least one of those being made within the past two months
- Are at least 18 years old and legally able to receive and own the knife
Entrants from outside of the United States are welcome. Please note, however, that (1) you are responsible for customs, VAT, and any other import fees if you win and (2) I must omit the basswood pieces from the package both to save shipping weight and to avoid potential customs issues with unfinished wood.
To enter, please clearly state that you are in and share a bit about one of your favorite pastimes. Whittling's one of mine.
The winner will be chosen by random number generator on the morning of Wednesday, May 31.
Thanks everyone for looking and good luck to all those who enter!
Edit—The winner has been chosen: see post #44.
