The Wife Greenlighted Another Purchase! Now I need your help...

Great suggestions so far! Thanks for feeding the flames everyone ;)

Pardon the ignorance but...I hear SO much about the pm2. What is it that people love so much about it?
PM2 is a wonderful knife in a great price range. But I personally think it's a bit over-hyped. I like the blade shape, love the S30V, and I really like the jimping on both the spine and the choil. It probably has the most "secure" feeling lockup and action of any knife I've ever owned, and you can really feel the quality of the knife when you open it. I carry mine at least 2 or 3 times a week, so why would I claim it's over-hyped? Well it's mostly because so many will attest to the PM2 as perfection. Personally I think it's a little chunky, I wish the edges were more rounded, the scales are pretty aggressive and really do a number on your pants pocket, and the grind on my blade was uneven from the factory (plus it wasn't quite as sharp as my delica was when new). All are pretty minor and nitpicking complaints, but I still feel the need to express them anyway because you mostly just hear about the greatness of this knife. On a very conservative scale I'd give the PM2 an 8.5/10.

Everyone should have a Swiss Army knife! As to which one...oh boy...

My favorite is probably the Explorer ($50 or so). I like the scissors, magnifying glass, tweezers, pen, straight pin (I work on computers..handy), and small screwdriver (great for eyeglasses). Sort thru the list of knives and find what works for you. Depending on what you pick, you will probably have some $ leftover, I'd suggest a Ontario Rat 2. The Rat 1 and 2 might be the best bang for the buck knives out there.

My vote goes to the Huntsman

For around $35-40

You got your long and short straight edge
+ your sawtooth blade (just in case),
scissors,
all the standard SAK bells and whistles,
AND the ever important cork screw, (just in case)...

It's a moderately sized (medium to large folder) with a great profile that locks into your hand. It's more than I would ever carry which is why I don't have one, but I do recommend it. It's not for me, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great knife. The lock mechanism is also very novel. It is again one of those super ergonomic work knifes from Spyderco!

In descending order of price, not quality: Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Manix 2, Native 5, Endura, Delica. If you buy a Delica you will buy another one.

If you like smaller knives and you're looking to spend about $100, that mini HK Axis by Benchmade looks great. I can't say because I don't own one, but it's hard to go wrong with an axis lock, G10 scales, and D2 blade steel for that price. I have a full sized Griptilian in D2 and I love the way it cuts and it sharpens well too. I prefer my knives to without the black coating on the blade, but the black finish on my Griptilian has held up wonderfully so I'd assume it'd be the same for the HK as well.

For $100, I would pick a PM2. It is a great knife, and a steal at $100. It is not a $300 knife, and will not have the details of a $300 knife, but I think it performs well above the typical $100 knife mark. The handles feel great and are large enough for multiple hand positions that all work well. The blade shape is very well thought out and really pragmatic, and it is my favorite knife to flick open and closed.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a better user in the $100 range.

I'm in the same situation. I have several on my list (the price range is just a tad higher) but you can never go wrong with a PM2 especially if you love the ones you already have. Any benchmade would be the same. I'm thinking about picking up a GEC or Northwoods depending on what models are still available. Good luck with your purchase, I'm sure you'll be happy with whatevery you get but it'll just make you want more!
