The Wonderous Whittler

Made in the 1920s, this nice old Empire whittler was hardly used, but coarsely cleaned with rough sandpaper!! You can still see the etch through the scratches!!
The Empire knife company had its origins as early as 1852. Acquired by the Alvord family shortly after, it grew to become one of the worlds biggest knife companies!! The Alvord family sold out in 1920, and the company declined slowly, and it was closed by 1930!

I was a little late to the party with GEC’s latest whittler, but I am glad I found one.

Your stag 47 is a beauty, Charlie. I'm especially impressed by the consistency and symmetry of the thickness of the stag on both scales.

Here's another 47 whittler in smooth bone that I acquired maybe 6 yrs ago and have stored away in its box.

Nice knife, Gary!! Looks like you've had it a while!!

For those of you who actually whittle or carve, what is the best frame you have used?
The only time I tried it was with a GEC #33, and I found it fatiguingly small.

I find shorter frames to be the most fatiguing. My favorite is the 62 pocket carver, best blades still kind of thin in the hand. The 35 cattle knife best to hold for me, not a purpose build blade but still very serviceable. Then the 38 English whittler is kind of the happy medium between the two.

Thanks, Jiki. The #33 Conductor that I used was only 3.31" closed, while the three GECs you mention are between 3¾" and 4", a considerable size difference.

These are humpback whittlers, but I think they belong here. Hen and Rooster in stag, Schatt and Morgan Premier lockback was my first long hunt, and the lovely little US Classic in smooth orange bone was a very kind gift from I Invoice when I asked to see it in the Todays Pile thread. Thank you I Invoice ! It took a little while, but finally got some early spring sunshine here in Oregon. 20230315_170103~2_resize_51.jpg20230315_163422~2_resize_96.jpg
