The ZT no one is talking about! ZT0804CF

I saw a plate for $29, so the price tempted me into getting it.
The main plate is unknown steel that my brother got, so it was an even better price...free! :D

After testing the free steel, I was pleased with its performance.

Around here we can get .25" thick Mil-A-46100E 10x12's for around $48 or $95 a pair of curved plates. I think that's tougher than AR500 IIRC.

But on topic... I wonder if anyone would trade me a new or used ZT 0804 for a pristine never cut anything Benchmade Sibert 757 Vicar (Black blade). Sweet knife, just not my style.

I came close to pulling the trigger on a 0804 last night for $220 but I'll wait a bit so the credit card is not killed if Operation 2 weeks picks up... I know the TRASH2's are gonna ship any minute.

Lack of notch is deal breaker.

You guys in the States have WAY better armour options, and at better prices. :)
Most places there won't ship to us in Canada though. :(

Given the price comparison, I am almost 100% certain that you could arrange a trade like that.
Not me, because I really, really like my 0804CF, but it is a comparable value trade that should make someone happy.

Take one of your well used knives apart and look. I guarantee there will be at least some wear into the titanium. It's a certainty because the grade 5 Ti used for a make shift race is much softer then the balls that are riding on it. It will be even more pronounced when hard use comes into play. I have personal experience and found a number of pictures and videos to represent it in all but a couple of minutes. You have to remember that thousandths of an inch makes a difference in a bearing. There is a reason why one piece bearings don't use titanium races even in applications where grams matter. You can argue all you want but, it's a poor engineering design. Put your post purchase rationalization bias aside and you will see that using a hardened steel washer like on the CF side would be a better design. That's why Eric did it on his Ti scaled flippers and that's why others do as well.

Ok Tachead I believe you....Let me give you an analogy you might understand. I bought a Toyota Corolla with 123K miles on it...I wanted a stick and I wanted it cheap, with cold air...2007 for $2400...Previous owner had hit a deer with it....stay with me this is relevant....I told a friend of mine we should take a road trip and see the USA, after all, I just got a "new" car...his replay was no, hell no, let's rent a car so we won't have to worry about car trouble...short story, trip didn't happen cause rental car is a waste of money. I still have that Corolla now with 187K miles on it and I have replaced Spark plugs and Front brake pads which were both OEM. That's all besides oil and filter of course and I drive the wiz out of it in the hills of the Ozarks, dirt or pavement not important to me, I just close the vents...I mat the throttle between every shift LOL...seriously, I do. (Never have had to charge the air either, still ice cold)

Moral of the story. If you want a 804cf knock yerself out, check it in 15 years for bearing, frame wear...if any is found send to KAI for free replacement.

End.

For me it's a combination of things that steered me away from it, I'm more of a 3.5" blade guy, and there's something just too "plain" about the top spine/handle when open, between the straightness of it, and the fact there's no thumb ramp/serrations there. I'd also like to see some texture/grooves/milling something on the CF side just to break up the slab. The price really isn't bad for a 4" blade with CF/Ti/CTS204P. Also the clip isn't super sexy, but it's better than what we find on the bulk of ZT knives.

Hey Todd...This blade is closer to many of my 3.5" blades than it is 4" blades...don't let the stated size intimidate!

I've been holding out for a non coated blade 804. Not that I dislike coated blades, just that I love how zt does satin finish on their blades.

FWIW I did read internet rumor (eye roll) that ZT was going to release in 2017 a new 0804 with 20CV blade steel. Maybe if true there would be cosmetic changes...I happen to like the color of that steel in it's natural form. Problem is there is nothing I have seen to verify this rumor but, ZT has many times done popular re-incarnations from knives that sell well. I have a 0303 for example and it historically started as the 0300, 0301, 0302...so ya never know, it could happen.

Not sure yet if I like this knife enough to buy it again...(RE:price point) but I like it fine the way it is...204P may not be my favorite steel either. I dig my 0909, look at that for $100 or so less...not quite as exotic but sure is worth the money.

Get rid of the bill boarding on the blade, the stupid pivot text, and the ZT logo on the clip
Straighten the bottom edge so that it's flat but sweeps up into the same shape

Milled clips are more than fine, it's just production companies have no idea on how to make them actually work like they're supposed to.
