Theft of slipjoint #041 FOUND IT, I,M AN IDIOT

I hate to hear that. I was eyeballing that knife pretty hard at the show and it is definitely a shame to think of it getting into undeserving hands.

Ted, you havent washed your socks for 30 years? I'm surprised they dont set off all the smoke alarms. :)
I always pack my knives in the toes of my extra pair of shoes - then stuff some dirty socks in there. Nobody wants to deal with that. Haven't lost one in almost 30 years.

Seriously, Bruce - that is a beautiful knife. Sorry for your loss.

Bruce,
That's really stinks!
TSA makes me wonder how "safe" we are.
Can you take them home in a locked case? Maybe put a round of ammo in there so it has to be "secured?"
Was a pleasure chatting with you the few moments I got. You were slammed with your skills and location!

Wont help here, but for the future. When I started flying with knives 11-12 years ago I got insurance from collect insure .com Not only are my knives covered everywhere, but they are also cover in the mail. The amount I save from not having to buy shipping insurance more than covers the yearly cost.

Sorry to hear that Bruce.
I had a Jay Hendrickson Hunter that I had waited 4 years for stolen out of my TSA checked luggage returning from the ABS Show in Reno some years back.
I had a check from Collectibles Insurance http://www.collectinsure.com/ exactly 30 days form reporting the claim. Don't hold your breath expecting to get anything from TSA.
As Don says, you will probably save the cost of your annual premium just in savings from what you have been paying in shipping/usps insurance.

Bumber about the knife, Bruce.

Thanks Karl! Got it edited

I remember reading about the Jay Hendrickson knife. I,m going to check into the insurance. The $400 loss isn't that much to pay for a lesson this important.

Today I called the Little Rock Police Dept and told them my story. It's a good thing there is a number on the blade otherwise they wouldn't have a chance to identify it. The nice lady listened to my tale of woe and gave me report number. Hopefully my info will be entered into the data bank and match up someday. It's Probally already been traded for crack cocaine.

Telephone and write (snail mail) your Congressman. Call the local newspaper and investigative reporters. A couple hours and a postage stamp will bring some heat down. The knife may be "fortunately" found in a drawer. I got a camera back that way.

Thanks Chris, Much appreciated.

I got a call from TSA this morning and they deny even opening the bag. They said if they had search the bag there would be a note saying so in plain view inside. I didnt get the note. I suppose that leaves them completely innocent. They told me it was scanned and taken to Uniteds carresel.
Nothing on Craigslist yet. I will continue checking.

Chris

Did you ask them if it ever occurred to them that maybe the TSA employee who stole your knife also stole the note?

That sucks BIG TIME Bruce. All thieves are scum!!! I would like to see em get their just desserts.
Cheers Keith

Stuff has been stolen out of bags long before the TSA was created. They screen the bags before they are handed to the same people who stole out of bags before the TSA.

Sorry for your loss brother. Once again TSA oversteps their bounds. If it was checked in luggage it was of no threat to anyone. The worst thing is the person who stole it probably has no idea how nice a knife it is.

I to have been the victum of theft while flying, had a Nikon camera stolen on a flight from Philly to Atlanta, TSA checked the bag, left a note saying so, but when I picked the bag off the belt at baggage the lock was missing, opened the bag and the lock was inside the bag, it had been cut with a pair of side cutters, TSA was covered with the note and the (LADY in claims) at Delta seemed to care less, filed the claim but to no avail, had lots of pictures of kids and grandkids on that camera. Should of carried it with me. Don't put anything in your bag that you don't want to lose. Once the bag goes on the belt into the plane it is out of sight of anyone and no cameras, easy to snip the TSA lock and run your hand inside a bag taking whatever you want. Like the insurance idea.

I'm not in any way defending the TSA, they could very well be guilty here...BUT keep in mind that almost every TSA checked bag area is monitored by video cameras. Can someone steal something there? Sure but once it leaves that area, where is the one place that it not under video scrutiny? The baggage hold of the plane!! There have been many, MANY arrests made of baggage handlers pilfering the bags they are loading in the underbelly of the planes. THAT is the weak link here. No one sees what happens as they load the plane unless they set up a sting operation and catch these theives in the act.

Just food for thought. Could have been TSA or it could have been a baggage handler. Either way, it sucks rocks and more than likely the scumbag will try to sell it somewhere, EBAY or Craigslist hopefully.

Travelling by commercial aviation has become a hassle and a half. High ticket prices that are non refundable, nickle and dime ammenities on board (God forbit you ask for a refill on the soda or a second pack of peanuts)...mechanical delays, that they are very sorry for but not sorry enought to refund a penny of the fare for it...overbooking the flight and bumping you to a later flight, with a courtesy round trip fare subject to every possible restriction and blackout date imaginable On top of that, you have to worry about stolen items because you can't lock a check-in bag.

Don't get me started...sorry, I guess I did get started.

Well, I'm an Idiot! I found it in my ditty bag inside a Ricola bag. I must have hid it there myself. Now I feel like such a fool and have to call everybody back and eat crow. At least I didnt make an absolute ass of myself and was calm when discussing this to the authorities and representatives.

Thanks everybody for your condolences. So sorry to raise suspicions toward the innocent. This does restore my confidence in the system. The folks I talked to are paid to be civil to their customers and they were very nice and professional. No cuss words were exchanged from me or them.

A more humble Bruce now
