!!! Geez I love it when a plan comes together. What a roadmap to uncloak lurkers hehehehehehehe.

You did indeed get me as I was all over the map with my reply here. You should have figured something was amiss what with my last comment about MY DAY PASS! Got another today by the way <grin>!

I really appreciate the comments about my son...he really is a good kid. I still haven't been able to reach him since you two talked. Suspect I'll connect this weekend and then he's off to the Pacific.

Now I'd really love to comment about Dona looking so cute when she's mad, but heck, I don't have any basis of comparison. Understand Rob has a photo but under penalty of a lot more than loosing kneecaps (Doc!) it remains held close to his vest. Oh well <sigh>....

Thaddeus,
The truly polictical correct would recognize that you have actually described an affliction, a syndrome, that any researcher worth the paper his tenure contract is written upon would quickly apply for a federal grant to study. Acronymically speaking, you just defined PWWTRABNTLHVVOTTHSYASPAVIPOB, or phonetically speaking, would approximate pewtrabanithlivothsyaspavipob. For short, we could call it Pewtrabitis or Pavipob's Syndrome. It can be characterized as a reluctance to post messages to a board where people try to confuse each other with Word Of The Day calendars and silly mannerisms, inside jokes, and behavior that a carpenter would describe as "half a bubble out of plumb". Judging by this inane post, I fit in fairly well, I'd guess.

Bob, congrats on the day pass. I was given my crayons back last week, but they took them away again after an "incident".

IM new to all of this too.
To me the word lurk is used with names like thief and assassin.
IE to lurk;to lie in wait;to lie hidden;to esacpe notice.

Walt, regarding the SNL skit, wasn't it "Jane, you ignorant ****!"? Not that it would make things any better...

Don,

You're kidding me! They actually promised to give you your crayons back? Heck, they won't let me have anything sharp ever since I snarled at one one the interns that I was heavily armed, easily bored and off my medication.... You know, some folks just have no sense of humor

Jeez; and to think that I started this thread to welcome 'lurkers'; I'll bet there isn't a one left, having fled from the cyber equivalent of Bedlam.

Oh, well, the best laid plans of mice and men, and so forth.

At least I got some great humor in the replies! Thanks one and all.....for that

No, I haven't been thrown off the Benchmade site yet, but the good doctor has already earned that honor.

So you know your warplanes, too. Have you considered making a quick $50k on Jeopardy?

Hey guys, I was just lurking and had nothing of any relevance to say, as usuall. But it is my God given right to lurk as it is in one of the lost 20 commandments;"thoughest shall have the rightest to lurkest on other peoples sites"
It is also in the constitution, the 98th Amendment, which states;"We as a free and sovereign people will keep the right to lurk, watch, oversee, or view. The right to lurk shall not allow any individual to willfully exceed lurking , thus, becomming stalking. Stalking will be considered akin to horse stealing. The right to lurk may be revoked if your server is overloaded, hacking has occured, a virus has invaded your system or the year 2000 has arrived."

Just some ridiculous rantings.

Now that all the regular lurkers are all hiding under their desks for fear of being hit by flying debris, I have gotten out my Webster's New Collegiate and looked it up.

A lurker is one who 1a. lies in wait in a place of concealment especially for an evil purpose b. moves furtively or inconspicuously (sneaks) c. persists in staying 2. is concealed but capable of being discovered, specifically to constitute a latent threat.

This all seems to substantiate Walt Welch's original problem with the word.

We know that in cyber-nerd-computerese the English language doesn't track with dictionary definitions, but the common terms also widely mutate as technology changes. I remember in the 60s when it originated at MIT the term "hacker" was applied with admiration and respect to only those wheels who really knew their way around a mainframe console, and did not just submit their stack of punch cards for processing through the in-basket. But now, with security on our PCs a prized entity, a hacker is entirely different. The terms that played on a phone BBS at 1200 baud may not work on today's internet.

With such wide access for every kind of person in the world to this forum we can no longer maintain the special in-crowd proprietary meanings for words that are used in everyday speech and clearly defined in the dictionary. The newbies (and the lurkers) greatly outnumber us.

So I agree with Walt in his concern for the poor lurkers out there. Now, if you will excuse me I am going to duck down and get back under my desk...

The term lurker does seem to denote some sort of evil intentions, but I do kinda like the dungeons & dragons sound of it. I am not one, but frankly, I do not blame people for not being willing to post here, or anywhere, for that matter. The few other times I tried to do IRC, or chat, or other types of forums, I was accosted by people who were mean, rude, and who had little interest in my mental state or level of self esteem. People can be mean when hiding behind a terminal. Seemingly normal people can lash out with whole tirades of vulgarity and epithets of hatred towards other people online, mostly because of their own self hatred. I was wary of posting here and at the other forums until I spent some time reading what other forumites had posted. I had found my niche. I can understand how others who were "wounded" online would be wary to post, or have just developed the habit of being read-only.

Lurkers are truly our loss in a way. I really enjoy reading other people's post's. I respect everyone's opinions. Even the simplest of questions can open new avenues of thinking, or at least let some of us stretch or brain muscles a little bit. Oh well...

I have no problem with the term, "lurker". While it may be defined negatively in a dictionary, like other perjorative words such a term can be taken and used within a certain context, subculture as it were, without the negative connotations. And this place is has subculture of sorts, defined around the love and use of knives.

Personally, I've been lurking here and another forum for quite awhile. New to knives I learn more by reading. It's also advisable to learn the lay of the land and its occupants and subculture. As Yekim pointed out, there are places you go where if you "announce" your prescence too early there is a chance of a reception that is less than what one may want or anticipate. Of course, being respectful mitigates a bit against that.

Well, just the thoughts of someone stepping out of the shadow with no "evil intent".

Sing,

Your post validates my earlier contentions that forumites (those that have posted) and "lurkers" both gain immeasurably from these forums. And, as with the old days, once "lurkers" become comfortable, they usually end up posting. The term "lurker" itself implies no negative connotations: just a "user" or "forumite" in waiting

Bob,

Thanks for the welcome. FYI, I almost bought the Spyderco Moran with all your enthusiastic posting though I have no need (I can see now) for a fixed blade. But, I am wavering... (let's see... JM at Chaicutley.com is it?

Yekim,

You have described very well my first experiences interacting with people hiding behind their terminals. Because of those negative encounters I stayed a lurker from last July on knifeforums and here until I finally posted in December. A full six months of lurking every day reading most everything. This was despite my having 38 years of experience as a ham (amateur radio) operator talking with strangers (both with voice and morse code) all over the world. The hams are not anonymous, they often have a broader base of common interests, and better skills for communicating, even with morse. There are still some threads that I am not willing to participate in here, but just lurk around instead.

I have one friend who was most happy the first time I called her FUBAR.

I have another friend who actualy responds to the names Brain Donor and @$!#head, he's strange even for someone who chooses to associate with a heathen like me.

Just goes to show that words can be taken in ways other than their dictionary meaning.
