Great story, Ken! Ebay is certainly a wonderful entertainment center. Following is an exact verbatim listing for a Schrade knife on ebay 2 or 3 years ago:

Good Lord!

The phenomenon which kootenay joe describes certainly does occur, but it does not make the seller unscrupulous, just annoying.

Not necessarily. Something to keep in mind is that Ebay carries many hundreds of thousands knives at any one time, and that the vast majority of these are the cheap imports that flood every category. If your price puts your item in the middle of that mess, the buyer may never be able to find you. So sometimes putting a higher price on something will improve its chances of selling.

I see your point. I myself have the time and the experience to pore through the morass with a few tricks and what has become a pretty good pair of eyes for the items that interest me. I don't miss much, but I do miss! If someone jumps on a BIN right after it lists, I might not see it. I am still able to release more money than is wise.

This 8OT is listed by my favoured seller on eBay. He must be one of the most experienced Schrade experts in the U.S.A. LOL.

Anyway, this knife can be obtained for your collection;
It has been discounted from U$549.99 by 20% off (you save U$110)
The price is now only U$439.99. This description may convince Collectors this is a knife to own. LOL

“1960-65 Schrade Walden 8-OT With Full Swage that extends to 4-5th tooth of the 16 Tooth match Strike Pull which is indicative of the very early 8-OT's made and introduced by the Schrade Walden Cutlery Co. between 1960-1965. It includes the original packaging that is stained and has some handling marks and tears inside and out including the blue velvet lined knife holder which is cracked. Great collectible or it could be used as an EDC, Everyday Carry Knife. These are extremely hard to find in this condition and especially with the original packaging. Sought after the world over they are a top notch addition to any Schrade Walden Collection or any knife collection period. Tang Stamped: Schrade over Walden over N.Y. USA and 8-OT on the obverse of the knife tang. Great Walk & Talk and no cracks in the Sawcut Handles. The Perfect Collectible. :confused:

The knife mentioned above, came in a "wood-look-a-like hinged box" it has the Delrin handles.
The 1960 Schrade 8OTs that came in the hinged wooden box had the bone handles.:)

After some 900 odd ebay transactions, most of which were as a buyer, I can say that I have had a very few unpleasant experiences but none were catastrophic, viz. the dremel tool.

The Dremel tool is not the worst ebay bum seller story. I left a tame, honest and short negative feedback for a guy that really went nuts on me. Let me first say that every important detail in the description was totally false and he lied to me when I asked him questions before the purchase. He got my contact info from ebay and started sending me emails, text messages and phone calls. First he tried to make me feel sorry for him;

Hi, if your unhappy I can do a full refund I did not know you had a problem? Please advise as this is how I feed and house my family.

But only if I revised the feedback, bribery;

I can offer a full refund please revise to positive as this is how I support my family

And;

We are a small family business, so we rely on feedback greatly to sustain a small business. Would a full refund earn your positive review

It was $16, I didn't care. Then he started threatening me with a law suit;

Please respond to this important legal document notice failure to respond to this legal notice will result in legal proceedings

Email test for ***** ******

And then;

Hello
I will have my corporate attorney file suite today, we will be during you for loss of business. He said he will be contacting your cell phone company to get your information because your phone has to be backed up by a credit card. Or sending a certified mail letter to the po box listed with signature confirmation required. At this time we have suffered a loss of estimated $4409 per day until the feedback is removed! I would suggest calling me back before this suite is filed. It is currently 9:00AM here and we will be filing this with the state around 12:00 today .

That represents just a few of the emails and none of the text messages and phone calls. I ignored him for a few days until I got fed up and emailed him and told him to go for it. I let him know that I was smarter than that and all he could do in reality is run to the end of his chain and bark, that's all. I also sent him pictures of the defective crap he sent me and quotes from his description detailing the discrepences. He left me alone after that and I tried to find a way to tell ebay off for giving that nut my contact info. Never could figure out how though. He didn't leave me any feedback and I countered his response to the negative I left him with how he tried to bribe me and threatened to sue me, so he looks even worse now. Backfire!

The goofy ebay listings are a source of enjoyment, sadness (many are pathetic), and once in a while, teeth grinding. For example, when something you've been looking for turns up at one of those prepostrously high starting bids.

But I look at it this way, a high and successful final price for a seldom seen item will often bring out others of the same, for copycat is the rule that many sellers follow. Eventually, something you want will show up at a price that fits your budget. But absurdly high prices for things are just part of the game.

Remember that most of the things we're looking for were made in the tens or hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of copies. More examples of what you want will turn up. Guaranteed.

Okay, you win. That trumps even the most ridiculous and inaccurate auction rants I've ever seen. :yawn: AND BORING!! (did anyone read all that?)

And how about those sellers that bid up their own items to get more money? Anyone that says it doesn't happen is either stupid or a liar. That's one reason that I always do the sniper bid. Post your max bid too early and a seller can and will bid up 1 dollar at a time till they reach your max bid and stop, using another account. You have to pay the full monty instead of getting a deal and they get more money. I have played that game too as a disgruntled buyer when some jackass is willing to pay 3 times what the knife is worth and throws a high max bid out there. Makes me mad and I'll keep bidding a dollar until I find his max bid and stop. So the seller has to buy his own knife back or the silly buyer gets to pay-up, in either case, it makes me feel better. :eek:

There is no end of games a person can observe and/or play on ebay. It is a world unto its own. Enjoy (when you can).

I know this is an older thread but a search brought me here. I just read the above Schrade History. Man have i got a lot to learn. I didn't know any of that !
kj

I got a deal on my "sabenza" lol. sometimes i'll purposely searched misspelled stuff then see a great price with no bids lol.
