Hello everyone,

I have been looking at some knives for a while, are these knives okay for a 1st timer?

The knives are Spyderco Delica, Gerber Edict, and Buck Vantage Pro.

I have been looking through some SOG AUS 8 knives, and after a bit of research, they are a bit overpriced comparing to others. Just wanted something better than AUS 8. What other knives do you guys recommend? Thanks.

For first timer, get a small, stainless, either folder or fixed which fit your taste, but properly folder for 1st timer. The Spyderco one look great!

Buck vantage pro gives you greAt steel at that price range. Delica is all around a great knife.

Delica. It will ruin you for lesser knives. This is a good thing, an education in a hurry.

Those knives are great options for a first blade. I'm a big fan of spydercos, however I have heard many good things about the vantage pro. Another one to consider is the Ontario rat 1 or 2; however, they are aus 8. The only thing to watch out for on the buck knife is that the s30v steel is more difficult to sharpen, so depending on your sharpening skill, it may be a challenge.

I vote is buck or spyderco. Me personally I have had both. I like the buck, but it really just depends what fits your hand the best, both are very solid!!

Both the Buck Vantage Pro and Spyderco Delica are excellent choices.

Both the Vantage Pro's S30V and the Delica's VG10 are better steels. Gerber uses mystery steel and should be avoided completely.

The Delica is light and an excellent slicer due to its full flat grind and edge holding VG10 steel.

The Vantage Pro is more robust and heavier, nearly twice as heavy as the Delica. But it's not 'too heavy'.

No 'wrong' choice between these two.

I'm a newb but this was my first EDC.......U.S. made & decent factory edge.....lots of good reviews on youtube

Any reason this isn't a good first-timer?

[edit].....Definitely gonna try out the Buck & Delica now

Wow. The overwhelming majority of people here are recommending the Delica. I am kind of more towards to the Buck Vantage Pro... tough choices.

Both are great, If you are leaning towards the Buck get it. You will like it ,nice deep pocket clip.
you can get the spyderco next.

Buck Vantage pro is a great knife. Give you the deep clip and a flipper (non assisted) for your 1st knife, two options some folks love, so you can get a feel right off the bat for the "extras" whether or not they are things you too will prefer or not going forward...
I'm not a fan of spyderco's myself. Great knives, very well made, no doubt, (but like any brand they got a few lemons squeek through qc as well), just never could get into 'em, don't "love" the feel of 'em in my hand like many others do, maybe I have funny shaped hands? Idk? and i hate the aesthetics of 'em...
Do they cut? Absolutely, and great, some of the best slicers around, but all quality brand knives cut pretty well (unless they're duds), and many others slice pretty damn good as well., For the money i'd rather buy something else nearly every single time, something that still cuts what i need it to, but that i csn enjoy holding and looking at...

You wouldn't go wrong either way though.... Not a knock on spyderco, just pointing out they aren't for "everyone"...
