I want to Thank ddran for sparking a great thread.

I like, and I have used, large knives at work for 65 years. I own many of the knives mentioned in this thread and several, like the Espada XL I and the Rajah I. have been on my wish list.

Many of the suggestions and comments, especially on Cold Steel, are in agreement
with my experience. I would add the 6" CS Ti-Lite Titanium for consideration as a very large Folder.

The Dire and the stunning Black Bear were new to me. Now on the List. The Elan for $10 was also a treat.

Charlie Mike, Lava Lamp and Carbide introduced me to the idea that the Spartan, and other large Blades, can be modified and redesigned to function more smoothly. Great ideas.

Chad2. What is that knife?

I have been sojourning in Tradition Land. My thanks to all for re-awakening my
interest in your wondrous and interesting world.

Mike H.

Cold Steel:
- Rajah 1(if you can find it) or Rajah 2 or 3
- Espada Large or XL (g10 or aluminum handle)
- Spartan
- XL Voyager and Vaquero
- 6" Ti-lite

Customs:
Pretty much anything by Dwaine Carrillo or Darrel Ralph, awesome folders but very big/bulky and over the $1000.00 mark

Opinel 13 is probably the one. I am not really sure about the pricetag though. :)

You can get a counterfeit Cold Steel Black Sable for around 40 bucks. It has a quarter-inch thick blade, and it weighs 13.6 oz. Very solid too.

Biggest one I still have is my original Lone Wolf Harsey. Not sure which of the later models it maps to, maybe none, really. It's one of the first generation with canvas micarta scales.

5" blade, 10.75" open. Liner-lock with a backup mechanism. For its size it carries amazingly well, you can carry it in a jeans pocket fine. Tip-down only, which isn't my preference and takes some time for me to adjust to. Still, it's pretty much only worth carrying if you think you are likely to need it.

It also doesn't work that well as a tool in civilization, for opening boxes or whatever. It's not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just that if you ever pull it out and open it inside all conversations stop and all eyes are on you. Not low-profile.

I'm surprised that nobody replied with any mention of Medford knives. The Pretorian has a D2 blade that is over a quarter inch thick. This is definitely the biggest thickest knife out there if money is no object. Absolutely stunning work from the most amazing craftsman! Tons of videos on them out there too.

Check out Bad Blood Knives. I've seen a couple of reviews of them around here, and they're big beefy knives in your price range. I think it's annoying that you put a $50 budget and people are posting $300-$700 knives.
