Thickest Knife Ya' Know!

ps. a while back Uncle Bill had placed a special custom order for an Hi customer. A part of the message requested a blade width of ~4". However, the translator misunderstood and the factory received an order for a 4" thick blade. They called Uncle Bill and asked him if someone really wanted a 4" thick kukri which would have been about 14' long! :D

Heh. Great story. I love that.

I'd think a blade that's near 1 inch in thickness must have some crazy hollow grinds. I imagine the blade looking like a "T" if viewed head on. I can't imagine a V grind on a blade that thick. The edge would be way tooo obtuse for anything more than splitting logs like a wedge. I'd bet a khuk with a thick blade like that (hollow ground) would make a mean chopper though. Lots of weight behind it to generate force on impact.

Any close ups of that big knife, particularly of the grind? Getting curious here.

No closeups of the knife that not2sharp is referring to, that pic was taken many years ago. Here is a 1/2 thick wood splitting machine called the Super CAK (Super Chiruwa Ang Khola).

TOPS has a new baby pry-knife that's 3/8" thick. I have the Ontario Signature Series RD6 that's 3/8" thick, I've never used it. It's so massive, and with it's full flat grind, quite alot of steel. Might make a good wood splitter, but I can't imagine doing too much delicate work. Even as a fighting knife, it's too heavy and thick to pentrate very deep. Depends on the knife, but there's such a thing as overkill as far as thickness, just depends on the use. I have no need for anything over 1/4" in general, but mostly 3/16" or less will do.
A 3/8" thick tomahawk works, if the grinds are weight reducing, same for a knife I guess. A longer blade for chopping, I can see some of those being thicker than 5/16". William Nease made a sword that was 3/8" thick, I'm sure it has plenty of power, as a trade off for speed.

The Busse MOAB is the thickest blade I know of at 0.4 inches thick, but one of those will set you back several thousand dollars. If you want thick, see if you can find a Scrapyard Regulator. They're .333 thick or just a hair over 5/16. You'll have a hard time breaking one of those.

Gotta be my khuks...smaller one was given to me by my brother in law who served alongside Ghurka regiment in east Timor cupla years back..Was given to him by ghurka commander for services rendered...apparently its the only issue (combat knife) that can split a kevlar helmet...dunno how true it is...great choppers anyway....FES

Chopping, I believe that. Stabbing, I'm sure anything would work.

Hell yeah, thats a beast!

I tried looking at the Busse knives, but they dont have the knives. I was thinking of buying the Busse FFBM, but on their website they only have one knife for sale.
Ah the frustration that is trying to order something from the Busse family. One of the few reasons I won't order from them anymore.
Blades over .33 thick are too heavy and pretty much useless in the real world

Gratuitous assertions are too flawed and pretty much useless in real conversations. :D
I'd say the same thing about anything over 3/16" thick but what do I know. :D
I wonder if anybody EDC's a kukri:p
There was an article not too long ago about a Gurka that destroyed a bunch of wannabe train hijackers with his EDC. A kuk. ;)
