Thickness of handles on Bushcraft knives

5" handle is big for me.

4" or just a little over is decent for me.

I have only average sized hands, but pretty long fingers so 4 or 4.5 with a 3/4" or above thickness is what I go for.

That depends on your hand really...my knives tend to be 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 in the size range you're asking about. But...(the big qualifier)...I didn't make the knives, so I had little choice on the handle size. The only choices I did have was putting custom handles on and then I could tweak the thickness and contours a bit.

What would you think of 4 and 3/4ths with a 4 and 5/16ths handle. That seems like it would be the max for most people

I meant:
4 3/4th handle

It depends on the shape of the handle too. I only have two 5" blades and they both have 4-1/2 handles...my Bark River B1 handle is about 4-7/8 and has a 4-1/4 blade. So you're in the right range, maybe even a little short relative to the 4-3/4 blade you've mentioned.

Ahh, I see you've corrected the specs while I was writing :-) Anyway, you seem to be on the right track.

3/4 or 5/8 is about what my favorite handles are, I think. Depends a lot on handle shape too. If anything, handles that are a bit on the thicker side are preferred, although I think I like handles a bit thinner than some here.

I liked the Bark River 'Fox River' - but I love the 'Gameskeeper'. It has about 4" for fingers between the hilt and the finger guard. It's palm swell is just under 7/8" and increases to over 7/8" at the hilt. For my medium plus hands, with carpal tunnel problems, it is comfortable, too. The 1 3/32"+ width at the swell helps, too. Of course, a 4 " x .215" concave A2 blade is nice as is the finger guard gives me some insurance, as well. Heck, I haven't bought a B R knife I don't love.

Thank you for all your input! I really appreciate it and will return the favor!

How about thickness of the blade..1/4th is a little thick don't you think? what about 5/16 or 3.175 mm?

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

1/8 is my favorite for a scandi. 3/32 even cool for a convex.

I think the 4mm British blades are a little on the thick side.

I need a little more than 7/8th but it is doable. I like an inch at the palm swell. Even my Aurora is a little thin for my tastes - but it is the best I have handled thus far... get it? Handled?

I prefer between 7/8" and 1". Just got a JK keppy from Spooky, and it has a very comfortable handle. Comes in at 15/16" at the swells. Works perfectly for me.
